Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Where Will Prince Fielder end up?
Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that it's at least speculated that Prince Fielder was on the radar of the Cubs.
Literally hours before Albert Pujols signed with the Angels, I wrote that the Cubs would be better suited to go after Fielder than Pujols. But that's a decision between two players. In reality, they need to disperse their money out and build an entire team.
The Cubs just don't have a lot to build on right now. They need arms and they need bats to place around Starlin Castro. Fielder would be a big name move, but his contract would be far too big for the Cubs to get him and build any kind of team around him.
As Sullivan said, the Marlins and Cardinals both have money available to them. They both unsuccessfully bid on Pujols. It would also make sense for the Rangers to try to land a counter-punch to the Angels.
Sullivan also said that the Mariners will be involved.
The most sensible choice is Texas. Clearly, this can win games and win in the playoffs. The Angels just landed Pujols and took Texas' best pitcher in C.J. Wilson away. The Rangers will need something, and Pujols' swing is made for that park.
Who will Get Gio?
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle detailed many teams that would be interested in acquiring Gio Gonzalez from the Athletics.
She listed the Blue Jays, Tigers, Yankees, Phillies, Reds, Nationals, Rangers, Diamondbacks and Marlins. While sense can be made around all of those teams, this logically comes down to the Yankees and Rangers.
New York needs a second arm to put behind C.C. Sabathia. With all due respect to Ivan Nova, he is not the kind of pitcher that should be starting a winner-take-all game in the playoffs. It took one rain delay in the ALDS to make that happen.
New York needs a second, reliable arm if they're going to do anything in the playoffs.
The Rangers make sense for a lot of the same reasons that Prince Fielder to them does. They need to land a counter to the Angels.
Gonzalez's numbers have been significantly held down by the lack of run support that he gets in Oakland. On the other end, his pitching style works well for the hitter-friendly parks in New York and Texas.
Brewers still need reliable second bat
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that the Brewers have inked Alex Gonzalez to come in and play shortstop, replacing Yuniesky Betancourt.
Gonzalez is a nice fielder, but his .270 on base percentage in 2011 was dismal. Now, the Brewers have some powerful bats in the lineup, but they are going to struggle to put consistent bats around Ryan Braun with Prince Fielder gone.
Power hitters like Rickie Weeks and Cory Hart can get hot, but good pitchers can pitch around those kind of hitters. They are far too one-dimensional to sustain hot bats through an entire season.
Milwaukee won't be able to replace Fielder's overall production, but they need a steady option to protect Braun. If they can't find him, the lineup will take a serious hit.
