Chris Paul Trade Rumors: Odds of All-Star PG Being Traded Quickly Decreasing

Tim KeeneyDec 8, 2011

Chris Paul is a hot commodity right now, but as it turns out, teams don't want to mortgage the future for one year of Paul.

Weird, huh?

According to David Aldridge at NBA.com, Paul has now stated that he won't sign an extension with the Los Angeles Clippers or the Golden State Warriors, two teams that were ferociously going after him.

Chris Paul will not commit to signing a contract extension after this season with either the Golden State Warriors or Los Angeles Clippers if he is traded to either team by the New Orleans Hornets, citing the potential financial hit if he were to do that rather than becoming a free agent and signing a new deal with a new team next summer, according to league sources. That has left potential deals with both teams in limbo.

The deals are in limbo because both teams would be crazy to give up Eric Gordon, Stephen Curry or even top draft picks for one year of Chris Paul.

It's unlikely the talented point guard would bring a championship to either team this year, so it just isn't worth it.

Couple this with the fact that Paul is reported to be unwilling to sign an extension with the Celtics, and there aren't a whole lot of options.

The Lakers are still there, but seem to be saving Andrew Bynum for a Dwight Howard deal. With the Hornets' stiff demands, it's unlikely L.A. lands Paul with a package around Pau Gasol.

Who else is left? We know Paul would sign an extension with the New York Knicks, but they don't have the trade pieces to acquire him.

As of now, there's just no team that both has the trade chips and is a long-term destination for Paul.

Unless a team is willing to go all in for this year (ahem, Celtics), I don't see the talented point guard being traded anytime soon.
