Predicting the Winners for All of College Football's Major Individual Awards

Randy ChambersDec 8, 2011

Since the college football regular season came to an end last weekend, there remain only two things left before the entire season comes to a close.

They would, of course, be the bowl games and the awards handed out to the top players of the year.

It's time to reward the student-athletes that had the best seasons in college football this year.

Here are the predictions for all of the major individual college football awards.

The Chuck Bednarik Award: Tyrann Mathieu

1 of 7

Is there any doubt the 'Honey Badger' will win the award for the best defensive player of the year? He was a problem for every offense the Tigers played this season.

He led the team in tackles with, 71, and had two interceptions.

Most importantly, he made the biggest plays for LSU when they needed them most, whether a sack, a fumble recovery, or returning a punt for a touchdown.

Mathieu may not win the Heisman this season, but he'll walk away knowing he was the best defensive player in the nation this year.

The Biletnikoff Award: Justin Blackmon

2 of 7

There's some tough competition for this award for top receiver, such as Robert Woods and Ryan Broyles.

But Blackmon was more productive than Broyles, and he's slightly more popular than Woods is.

Blackmon is the leading receiver on this high-scoring Cowboys offense, boasting 113 receptions for 1,336 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He went over 100 receiving yards in six games this season, and only failed to get in the end zone twice this year.

He recently said that he will be taking his talents to the NFL after this season. He'll make some team very happy.

The Maxwell Award: Andrew Luck

3 of 7

We should know how these awards work by now.

The voters like to spread them out so everybody walks away with a little something. Since I don't have Luck winning the main award, I put him here, to win the Maxwell Award for the college football player of the year.

Luck had a great season, throwing for 3,170 yards, completing 70 percent of his passes and throwing for 35 touchdowns.

His team only lost one game this year as well. He has the hype and the numbers to walk away with this award.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award: Robert Griffin III

4 of 7

Picking out just one quarterback is a very difficult thing to do, but since one has to be picked, I'm going with Robert Griffin.

Case Keenum shouldn't win the award, given how his season ended in horrible fashion to Southern Miss.

Andrew Luck already won an award, and Griffin's numbers are better than Luck's in every category.

Robert Griffin had a phenomenal season, and if it weren't for him, the Baylor Bears wouldn't be where they are right now.

The Doak Walker Award: Trent Richardson

5 of 7

Trent Richardson will likely win this award for both his individual success and where his team is right now.

Richardson was pretty much the Crimson Tide's offense, as they had little to no passing game this year. He rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, while averaging six yards a carry. He put this offense on his back the entire year.

LaMichael James missed a couple of games, and his team wasn't nearly as successful.

Montee Ball had a monster season, but wasn't consistent enough. The bulk of his numbers came at the end of the season.

The John Mackey Award: Tyler Eifert

6 of 7

Eifert had a great season at Notre Dame, catching 57 passes for 713 yards and five touchdowns.

He went over 50 receiving yards eight times this year, and caught at least five passes five times this season.

Dwayne Allen and Orson Charles had great seasons as well for their respective schools, but Eifert has 200 more receiving yards than both of them.

Besides, Notre Dame has to win something this season, right?

Heisman Trophy: Robert Griffin III

7 of 7

The award everybody has been waiting for: I have Robert Griffin winning the Heisman Trophy.

It's really simple to me.

He had the best overall season with a lot less help.

He made the players around him better and led the Bears to a 9-3 season.

And you could argue that he lost three games, but lack of defense contributed to that more than anything.

He has a higher completion percentage, more passing yards and more touchdowns than Andrew Luck. He's also thrown three less interceptions.

This is all while playing with less weapons, and not playing behind one of the top offensive lines in the country like Luck is.

The other three candidates are all very deserving, but RG3 plays on by far the worst team, and he made them relevant.

Take Griffin out of Baylor, and they're not even in the Top 25, and would be lucky to even reach a bowl game.

Robert Griffin was the first player from Baylor to be nominated for the Heisman, and he should be the first to win it.
