NBA Trade Rumors: Stephen Curry Too Big a Price to Pay for Uncertain Chris Paul
The race to get Chris Paul away from the New Orleans Hornets has many participants. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Golden State Warriors are one of the teams involved in that race.
Now, as I am sure you would imagine, the Hornets aren't going to give Paul up for just anyone. Wojnarowski confirmed that in his report.
"The Warriors’ offer for Paul is centered around Stephen Curry and rookie guard Klay Thompson.
"
There are a few problems with that.
For one, Curry is just too valuable to the team. It's way too early for the Warriors to give up on that pick, especially given how much he's accomplished in such a short time.
Paul is a great player, but acquiring him by trading Curry and a player the team just used a lottery pick on is too much. If talent alone doesn't convince you, there's another reason, and it comes from the same report.
"Paul hasn’t promised he would re-sign with one of those teams following the 2011-12 season if they acquired Chandler, but league sources said Chandler could make a significant difference in ultimately swaying Paul to commit to a long-term deal.
"
The Chandler he's referring to is Tyson Chandler, who hasn't signed with anyone yet. As was reported by Wojnarowski, the Warriors are one of the teams involved in those talks. But even signing him doesn't guarantee that Paul will come in.
On talent alone, this is a bad trade. That could be debated, I suppose, but if you really think about it, the Warriors are giving up far too much for Paul—as great as he is.
Even if you're not convinced that that's true, the Warriors would be giving up an awful lot of talent for a player that's not guaranteed to be around for a long time.
That's way too much of a gamble for the Warriors, or any team, to take. If they are going to give up that kind of talent, they need to know that Paul will be a long-term solution.
Paul will need to provide more of a promise to his potential new teams before anyone will be willing to make that kind of a move.
In this case, we're talking about the Warriors. Paul is a marvelous player, but this move doesn't make enough sense for the Warriors.
