BCS Rankings: Evaluating Baylor and The Best 3 Loss Teams
Three losses in college football may be a death wish to your hopes and dreams of a BCS bowl game (usually), but that doesn't mean they aren't elite teams.
This year, three teams who have experienced three disappointing Saturdays are still on the fringe of the top 10:
No. 12 Baylor Bears (9-3)
Baylor got off to a very slow start, losing three-of-four in October, but they have ripped off five wins in a row with quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has forced his way into the Heisman race. His 3998 passing yards and 36 TDs are nothing short of spectacular, and he's doing it in a Big 12 conference that is the second best in the nation.
It's a shame they were only rewarded with a December 29th matchup against Washington in the Alamo Bowl.
The Bears can beat No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 13 Michigan and No. 23 West Virginia—all teams with BCS bids.
No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners (9-3)
The wheels really fell off the wagon in Norman, and now Oklahoma has to play in the Insight Bowl against Iowa. That doesn't discount the fact that QB Landry Jones (4302 yards, 28 TDs) is one of the five best signal-callers in the nation. He is NFL-ready, and you can expect him to end his collegiate career with a bang.
The preseason No. 1 team has beaten three ranked teams and is only behind Baylor because they lost to them last month.
This is the most talented three loss team in the country.
No. 15 Clemson Tigers (10-3)
Count me as a member of the Tajh Boyd fan club. The sophomore QB (3578 yards, 31 TDs) has exploded on to the scene and has single-handily turned the fortunes of the Tigers for the next two years.
They have beaten a BCS bowl team twice (Virginia Tech) and also sport wins over Auburn and Florida State.
Their inexplicable loss to North Carolina State is the only thing keeping them away from a top 10 ranking, and will show you why against West Virginia in the Orange Bowl. They don't deserve to be in a BCS game over Baylor and Oklahoma, but they are still one of the best 10-to-13 teams in the country if you ask me. Certainly better than the aforementioned Hokies and No. 13 Michigan.
