BCS Rankings: Dark Horses with Best Cases for BCS Bowl Berths
With the conference championships handed out, there are only a few decisions left to be made on who’s headed to the season’s top bowls. These three teams aren’t likely to find themselves on the right side of the BCS cutoff, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a chance at BCS glory:
Boise State Broncos
Even with their gaudy 11-1 record, the Broncos are going to be frozen out by the BCS once again. While the team that handed Kellen Moore’s squad its only loss—the TCU Horned Frogs—has a great chance to earn a BCS spot, Boise State will fall into the Corporation-of-the-Week bowls again.
Boise’s impressive No. 7 standing in the BCS won’t convince a bowl commissioner to pick them over a team with bigger national name recognition (like Denard Robinson and Michigan). Moore deserves better for his college swan song, but he’s not going to get it.
Arkansas Razorbacks
No, the BCS isn’t actually going to take three SEC schools, but it certainly should. Arkansas hasn’t looked good in losing to No. 1 LSU or No. 2 Alabama, but it has beaten three other opponents who were ranked at the time and finished 10-2 for the season.
The fact that the Razorbacks’ loss to LSU came so late in the season was likely the final nail in their BCS coffin, which is a pity. Tyler Wilson could trade TDs with even the high-powered offenses of the BCS, and no two-loss team has played better than this one.
Kansas State Wildcats
Collin Klein and company have been under the radar all season, but they’re also the only team in the Big 12 without a “bad” loss on its record. Having only fallen to Oklahoma and OK State, the Wildcats have one of the nation’s best two-loss résumés.
Klein himself has been sensational, rushing for 1,013 yards and 25 TDs with a bit of passing on the side. After they fell to Brandon Weeden’s squad by only a single TD, there’s little doubt that the Wildcats could hold their own in the BCS talent pool.
