BCS Rankings Week 15: Teams That Must Plummet from BCS Contention
The last week of the regular season is a golden opportunity for teams to prove that they belong in the BCS.
Some prove their worth, some don't. It happens every year, and this year was no exception. This year, these teams proved that they just don't belong. They're good teams, but not BCS worthy.
Houston
Given their strength of schedule, Houston needed to go undefeated to be in a BCS game. Not only did they not seal the deal today, they were pummeled against Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles came out early and outplayed the Cougars from start to finish.
That was not a fluke. Houston was just dismantled. Now, Houston belongs in a bowl game, but not a BCS game. The lack of quality wins really diminished the Cougars' credibility. Still, an undefeated season would have done enough to put them in.
Saturday's loss didn't do anything for the good of future non BCS conference teams trying to earn a spot in those games.
Georgia
Now, Georgia was only going to be involved in the BCS discussion if they beat LSU. The BCS rules say that they can't take three teams from the same conference unless two non champions are No. 1 and No. 2 in the rankings.
This loss did nothing to make me think that that rule needs to be changed. The Bulldogs did the one thing they couldn't do: They had momentum and the lead, they and punted the ball to Tyrann Mathieu. Terrible move.
They're a talented team, but not ready to be called a real BCS team, or even a BCS snub.
Kansas State
Those losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State really loom large. More importantly, the fact that Kansas State is not a particularly big draw hurts the Wildcats in a big way.
Unlike the other two teams, Kansas State won on Saturday. But when you're looking for an at-large bid, you need to earn style points.
At home against Iowa State, the Wildcats just didn't do that. They aren't at the level of a BCS team. Kansas State is good, but not worthy of being in a BCS discussion.
