College Football Week 14: Sickest Highlights from Saturday's Games
In a week short on games, but heavy on BCS impact, there were still a nice collection of plays in these, the big games.
Among the games featured:
Baylor vs Texas
Cincinnati vs Uconn
LSU vs Georgia
Syracuse vs Pittsburgh
The Big East BCS bowl berth was still in doubt, the Cincinnati and Uconn game had direct effect on that. As well as possible BCS title implications from the SEC title game.
Check out the top plays from these games.
Ryan Griffin
1 of 10Uconn was decimated at the QB spot, Johnny McEntee had a rough first half, but rebounded in the second half with plays like this one to Ryan Griffin.
Even though the Huskies scored here, the Bearcats held them off 35-27 to win the Big East title game.
Tony Gonzalez: Not That One, the One at Pitt
2 of 10Back to the Syracuse and Pitt battle, this time Anthony Gonzalez takes the direct snap in for the TD run. Gonzalez goes outside left and utilizes the second best stiff arm of the day.
Gonzalez had six rushes for 36 yards on the ground and this TD.
Cincinnati Has the Munchies
3 of 10Cincinnati's backup QB Munchie Legaux pressed in to action after Zach Collaros suffered a broken ankle earlier this season. Munchie struggled earlier in the season, but not today. The converted WR stepped up and delivered a great performance in the Big East title game.
Here he hits freshman Alex Chisum for the TD pass. Chisum made a nice adjustment and made the play.
A Furious Block
4 of 10One of the most common occurrences in an upset on the gridiron is a big special teams play. Well, here it is, Furious Bradley busts through with his Southern Mississippi teammates and blocks the punt by the Houston Cougars.
The ball was recovered by the Bradley and returned for a TD. The Eagles handed the Cougars their first loss of the year, knocking Houston from a BCS berth.
RG3 in 21 Seconds
5 of 10Robert Griffin III is trying to prove he not only deserves to be invited to New York for the Heisman trophy ceremony, but he maybe should win it.
In 21 seconds, on the first play from scrimmage, Griffin hits his No. 1 target, Kendall Wright, for this 59-yard TD play.
Baylor has taken it to the Longhorns on Saturday to prove their national legitimacy once again.
Cincy Snatch
6 of 10Cincinnati's Walter Stewart gets penetration against Uconn's Johnny McEntee, instead of trying to sack him, he just snatches the ball from McEntee's hand in the endzone.
The play was unusual and ruled a fumble recovery for a TD.
Hubert's Stiff Arm
7 of 10John Hubert just did his best Adrian Peterson impersonation. He throttles a Cyclones defender on the sidelines of this 26-yard TD run.
The Cyclones played the Wildcats tough, but Kansas State held on for the win and a possible share of the Big 12 title.
Texas One Hander
8 of 10Texas did have one highlight in their game against the Baylor Bears. Though the day belonged to RG3, Case McCoy found Blaine Irby in the back of the endzone for a leaping, one handed, two-yard TD reception.
Though the officials were waving it off, it did count, after review.
Honey Badger's Sweet Return Part 1
9 of 10The Honey Badger is electrifying. He has a nose for the ball and big plays like I haven't seen from a defensive player in college football since Charles Woodson.
Here he takes a punt back 62 yards for a TD. There was plenty of controversy and talk about the fact that Mathieu probably flipped the ball to the official before crossing the goaline.
In my opinion, this situation makes this a ridiculous call. He wasn't even showboating, so critics can't use that as a reason. Treat it like the vicinity play on double plays in major league baseball.
Honey Badger's Sweet Returns Part 2
10 of 10This guy is sick.
This time he holds on all the way through the endzone. This return gave the Tigers great field position to punch in the commanding third TD of the game.
The stop and start, acceleration and feel for daylight is what defines a true playmaker.
Tyran Mathieu nearly single-handedly took the SEC title from Georgia.
