BCS Bowl Predictions: 3 Upset Scenarios That Just Won't Happen

John PattonDec 3, 2011

College football bowl match-ups will be announced Sunday evening.

So, at the time of this writing, no games are definite. However, using a little bit of educated reasoning, we can make projections as to what might happen come late December and early January.

Here is a look at three potential upset scenarios we just can't possibly imagine happening.

The SEC Won't Have a Losing Record

1 of 3

With the Southeastern Conference Championship Game between East winner Georgia and West winner Louisiana State yet to be played, it isn't definite that LSU and Alabama will rematch one another on Jan. 9, 2012 for the BCS national title.

But, it's as close to definite as you will find.

Because that game likely will be played, the SEC is assured not only of housing the national champion, but the conference also will have at least one loss in bowl season.

However, don't count on many more than that.

Bowl-eligible teams not named Alabama or LSU include Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

The latter three are all 6-6, but they are 6-6 playing an SEC schedule, meaning they could be nine-win teams elsewhere. And elsewhere is where their bowl opponents will come from.

UCLA May Win, but It Won't Prove It Belongs

2 of 3

Despite being just 6-7, UCLA is expected to accept an offer to play in either the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl or the Las Vegas Bowl.

That known, no matter what the Bruins do in their postseason game, they will never convince the public they actually belong in a bowl.

Sure, they "won" their division of the Pac-12, but that was because rival Southern California—the same USC that beat UCLA, 50-0, last weekend—is on probation.

Bowls are supposed to be rewards for quality seasons, meaning invitations sent out to 6-6 teams are dubious in nature. Invites to 6-7 teams just shouldn't happen.

Houston Won't Finish in the Top 3

3 of 3

If the Cougars defeat Southern Mississippi on Saturday afternoon, they likely will earn a spot in a BCS bowl game (possibly the Sugar Bowl).

And they'll do so as one of just two undefeated teams (provided Louisiana State beats Georgia in the SEC Championship Game).

Still, Houston, while a nice story, just hasn't played a schedule worthy of praise or a top-three ranking, something that beating a team like Michigan in the Sugar Bowl won't change.
