BCS Rankings: Why Houston Deserves to Play for BCS National Title
If and when the Houston Cougars remain undefeated this season by pulling out a come-from-behind victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday, they deserve to play for a national title against LSU.
That’s right, BCS enthusiasts: there is no way Alabama deserves the chance to play LSU in the BCS Championship more than Houston does.
The Houston Cougars are sitting on a 12-0 record right now and are facing off against their toughest competition of the year in the Conference USA championship game. With a win, Houston would be 13-0 and deserve a chance at playing for a national title.
The only other team that ran the table was LSU, and the last time I checked, wins mean more than any other statistic on the board. Say what you want about strength of schedule, but Houston beat who they had to for this undefeated season to happen.
All of their success has come from their potent offense, which ranks first in the entire country in points per game (52.7) and pass yardage (449.7). With all of that offensive pressure, LSU would have a tough time getting pressure on Cougars quarterback Case Keenum with so much attention paid to his receivers.
The intrigue is about the two undefeated teams that qualified for the rankings going against each other in a classic college-style offense versus a pro-style defense.
While teams like Alabama and Oklahoma State think they deserve a shot at the BCS title game, they lost games. Houston did not. Perfection is something not earned often in college football, and it should be rewarded as such.
Just like Boise State, experts pass over the better teams in exchange for the powerhouse conferences that offer the most money to be made.
Houston won’t get a national title bid because it wouldn’t make as much money as an LSU vs. Alabama rematch. That's just a truth they'll have to live with.
