BCS Bowl Predictions: Offensive Explosions That Will Light Up CFB Fans

Thad NovakDec 3, 2011

As the conference title contenders gear up for their final games, the BCS roster is about to be set. For any fans of high-scoring offense, these are some likely matchups to root for in the BCS bowls:

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Stanford

Assuming, of course, that Oklahoma State comes up with the clutch home win over Oklahoma today, the Cowboys will be the Big 12 champs and will earn an automatic spot in the Fiesta Bowl. Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon have been as prolific as any QB-WR combination in the country, and put up some impressive numbers even in their team’s one loss (an upset at Iowa State).

Stanford, meanwhile, will be available to any BCS game since Pac-12 champ Oregon will be playing in the Rose Bowl. Likely Heisman winner Andrew Luck will put plenty of points on the board in his own right, but the Cowboys have better receivers for Weeden and they’ll get enough big plays to top the Cardinal here.

Sugar Bowl: Arkansas vs. Houston

With the SEC’s top two teams headed for the BCS title game, the Sugar Bowl will be thrilled to have a chance to bring in another team from its flagship conference. Arkansas has a great case as the nation’s best two-loss team, and Tyler Wilson’s passing attack was good enough to make a few plays even against the impenetrable defenses of LSU and Alabama.

For their opponent, the Houston Cougars make the most geographical sense for the New Orleans-based bowl. Case Keenum’s squad will put up bushels of points, but look for Arkansas to come out on top in a thriller.

Rose Bowl: Oregon vs. Wisconsin

Weird though it is to list a Big Ten team in a compilation of high-powered offenses, the Badgers’ ground game has earned that consideration. RB Montee Ball has scored 34 TDs (29 rushing)—the second-highest total in FBS history for one player.

Assuming the Badgers win the Big Ten title game rematch with Michigan State, they’ll draw the light-speed spread offense of the Oregon Ducks, who trounced UCLA last night for the Pac-12 crown. Even as good as Ball and Russell Wilson have been this season, they won’t be able to keep up with the dazzling Ducks on Jan. 2.
