LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: Why the BCS Got It Right
The BCS National Championship Game will feature the two best teams in all of college football and that’s the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide, and you won’t hear a complaint out of me.
It seems that I may be in the minority here, but I favor this rematch and I’m glad it worked out this way for several reasons.
You’re the Best Around!
The first reason is that these are the two best teams in the nation, and if you deny that, I seriously consider the knowledge you possess pertaining to college football. Both schools have destroyed every opponent they’ve faced except for one another.
The talent that both of these teams possess on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense, is unmatched. Heck, I’ll let the Sun Belt, Big East and WAC conferences combine their defensive stars and it still wouldn’t compare to these two teams.
The Tigers have faced the elite offenses around college football like the Oregon Ducks and Arkansas Razorbacks, and yet they’re still ranked second in the nation in points scored against.
Second to whom? Oh, that would be the team that the LSU Tigers defeated 9-6 a month ago. Face the facts, BCS haters, Alabama and LSU are the two best teams in the country and the BCS got it right this time around.
America Needs To See This Thing Again
The second reason is that the first game was an instant classic. I know the Big 12 schools and Houston Cougars of the world have altered college football fans’ minds of what great football actually is, but let me remind you that it is defense that wins championships.
A great defensive game is an absolute masterpiece in my mind, and that’s what we saw on Nov. 5 when these two teams met one another. Neither defense allowed a touchdown and both of them combined for four interceptions, including an absolutely amazing interception by Eric Reid.
This was a great back-and-forth football game, and even after LSU defeated Alabama, some analysts said that Alabama is better and just made more mistakes.
Well, what better way to find out if that was the case rather than a rematch for all the marbles?
Want To See a Good Game?
The last reason that I want to leave you with is that when these two teams play in New Orleans, it’s almost guaranteed to be another great game. Both teams are too closely matched and neither team will be able to pull away from the other.
That wouldn’t be the case if LSU played Virginia Tech, Houston, Stanford or whoever else you want to throw in the lion’s den. Just look at what LSU did to the No. 3 team in the nation last Friday. LSU came out flat and went down 14-0, but then they quickly turned on the jets and started playing dominant football.
After the Tigers were outscored 14-0, they scored 21 unanswered points and beat the Hogs 41-17. Do you really want to see a blowout in the national championship or do you want to see the two best teams going at it one more time?
And don't tell me that wouldn't happen to any of the teams I just named because it would. This LSU team is just too dominant on defense for it not to.
I like to compare this team to water breaking down a dam. The defense and special teams punch a hole in it, and then the rushing attack on offense is the water that eventually breaks the dam down. They just overwhelm teams like water overwhelming a weakened dam, and it all starts with their significant play on defense.
In my mind, there’s nothing to gripe about. The SEC is the best, and they’ve proved that the past five years in the national championship game. An All-SEC national championship will be college football at the highest level, and that’s something that no fan of college football can complain about.
