Mike Leach: Washington State Would Soar under Former Texas Tech Coach's Guidance
Mike Leach has been out of coaching since being fired by Texas Tech for alleged inappropriate treatment of Adam James, the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.
Leach, whose firing was embroiled in controversy, was an excellent football coach before leaving Texas Tech in 2009. The Red Raiders never had fewer than seven wins in his 10 years as football coach, and he led the team to a bowl game every year, including the Gator Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Alamo Bowl in his final three seasons.
Now Leach has reportedly been offered the job at Washington State and has verbally agreed to coach the Cougars, via Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.
Leach has been waiting a long time for another opportunity after Adam James accused him of ordering him to stay in a darkened garage after sustaining a concussion. He was a candidate for the Maryland job before Randy Edsall was ultimately hired.
Washington State is in dire need of some leadership. The Cougars have won nine games combined in their last four seasons, including a 1-11 record in 2009.
This season, the Cougars went 4-8, but surprisingly beat Arizona State on Nov.12, 37-27. The team's offense has been led by quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, running back Rickey Galvin and receiver Marquess Wilson.
Leach may be just the man to turn Washington State around, racking up 23 years of coaching experience throughout his career.
The Cougars needed a miracle, and they may have just found one.
