NBA Free Agents: Andrei Kirilenko and More Savvy Vets That Will Make an Impact

Alex KayNov 29, 2011

It’s about to become crunch time for NBA general managers as free agency is finally about to begin.

With the day to start signing free agents and training camp now merged together, teams barely will have time to evaluate talent and get their final roster together before the Christmas tipoff.

That’s why veteran free agents are going to be extremely valuable.

There are miles of tape on these guys and GMs will know exactly what they are getting when they extend a contract their way.

Let’s take a look at some of the better veterans available right now, without even considering the amnesty clause that will see quite a few more become available.

Andrei Kirilenko

AK-47 is playing with CSKA Moscow right now but his contract allows for him to return to the NBA. That’s exactly what he should do and eager teams will find a place for a man with his versatile skill set.

His career averages are solid and consistent, putting up 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, two blocks and 1.4 steals a game while being an effective third or fourth option scoring-wise.

What’s not to like about those numbers?

He is a premier defender as well, capable of guarding the best perimeter player on the opposing team and going down low when needed.

Many teams feel they are a big man away from winning a title and Chandler is the guy they need to fill that gap.

He anchored the defense of the Mavericks and helped lead them to an NBA Finals victory.

The 7’1”, 235-pound behemoth is perfect for protecting the hoop and quarterbacking a defense around him.

Whoever signs the 29-year-old is going to be very happy with their pickup.

David West

If your team has a hole at the 4 and could use some efficient scoring, West is the best available option.

Nicknamed the “17-foot Assassin” for his deadly range out to that distance, this power forward has been quietly eviscerating opponents with New Orleans for eight seasons.

He’s due for a solid pay raise and he’ll earn it with a jump shot that won’t fade any time soon.
