BCS Rankings Week 14: Virginia Tech and the Biggest BCS Frauds
The BCS computers are really starting to bug me with their head-scratching projections that make you want to bang your head against a brick wall. You'd think they would have sorted out the mess by Week 14.
Instead, unproven teams that have played tissue-paper-soft schedules are being rewarded. It's not fair to teams that actually went out and played somebody this year. Here are three teams the computers love, which proves why analytical evidence isn't the best way to decide the fortunes of college football.
No. 5 Virginia Tech
The Hokies have zero marquee wins. The best win of the year was against a now unranked Georgia Tech team. They were trounced by then-No. 13 Clemson 23-3, they beat Duke by four and East Carolina by seven.
The main reason the Hokies have experienced success is because of David Wilson. The junior running back has 1,595 rushing yards and nine rushing TDs on the season and has helped V-Tech control the time of possession. That has inflated the numbers of its defense, which is now ranked seventh in the nation, allowing 15.5 points a game.
I think on a neutral field every team in the top 10 could beat the Hokies. They will eventually get smashed in their BCS game, I just wish we could prevent it from happening to begin with.
No. 8 Arkansas
The gig is up. The Razorbacks were able to fool us for the entire season because of the lack of elite QBs they faced.
A 41-17 loss to No. 1 LSU proved the 40th-ranked defense just isn't that good. It has now given up 38 to No. 2 Alabama, 38 to Texas A&M and 41 to the Tigers.
The eighth-best team doesn't do that. The No. 8 team doesn't have the 80th-ranked run game (138 YPG) either.
No. 16 Michigan
The Wolverines have beaten one ranked team this season (No. 19 Nebraska) and have a QB in Denard Robinson that struggles to complete even the easiest forward pass.
They currently have the inside track to the Sugar Bowl, yet would lose to every single team ranked in front of them.
There is a glaring problem with this broken system, and expect all three teams to lose their respective bowl games to prove the worthlessness of the BCS.
