BCS Rankings: Why a Rematch Between LSU and Alabama Is Good for College Football

Ryan RudnanskyNov 27, 2011

College football fans should be excited about a potential rematch between LSU and Alabama in the BCS Championship Game because they are simply the two best teams in college football.

The main squabbles against a rematch are that, one, we've already seen this dance, and, two, the average fan doesn't want to see another 9-6 defensive battle.

But don't you realize what we are doing? We are arguing against the very thing we've criticized the BCS for throughout the years. The argument against the BCS system is that it doesn't get the bowl games right, but when it potentially does this season, we contradict ourselves.

I'll admit, I was sour on the idea at first, for the simple fact that it would have been nice to see things mixed up in the title game.

These are the two best teams in college football, and there should be no debating that at this point. LSU and Alabama have earned the right to be featured in the title game and, when you take a second to look at the two teams, they are actually very exciting squads.

The No. 1 reason we should be applauding LSU and Alabama is their defenses. I know offense generally excites the average fan more, but when I look at these two defenses, it's hard not to be thrilled.

Alabama is giving up 8.8 points per game, LSU is giving up 10.6 points per game. There is absolutely no way this should happen in a conference as menacing as the SEC. Case in point: LSU limited a scary Arkansas offense to 17 points in Week 13. Arkansas is averaging 37.4 points per game this season.

On top of that, there are some great individual stories. Alabama running back Trent Richardson is in line to win the Heisman Trophy. LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson has endured struggles on and off the field only to lead the Tigers to a huge victory against Arkansas. Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron has been very efficient after the departure of Greg McElroy to the NFL.

There are a wealth of elite NFL prospects between the two teams and, as far as I'm concerned, I could watch Richardson and LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu play all day long.

We were so critical of a 9-6 game that we forgot just how dominant these defenses are.

Something also tells me a running back of Richardson's caliber could bust out with another opportunity against LSU.
