BCS Rankings: Alabama's Position Exposes SEC Bias Within Terrible System

Adam WellsNov 27, 2011

When this weekend’s slate of college games was complete, the common consensus was that Alabama was the second-best team in the country and deserves a spot in the BCS Championship.

However, a deeper look into the schedule makes it patently obvious that is not necessarily the case.

The sad part is that no one really seems to notice this and has just conceded that the Crimson Tide will get their rematch with LSU on January 9.

From Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN.com:

"

"Who needs next week's BCS Selection Sunday when you have this week's See Ya Saturday?

Seriously, who's kidding whom? Unless No. 1 LSU spends January abroad and No. 2 Alabama goes on Christmas break—and doesn't return—then we've got our Allstate BCS National Championship Game matchup.

It all became 99.9 percent official Saturday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium. That's when and where Alabama toyed with Auburn as if it were teasing a kitten with a ball of yarn."

"

Why?

Why is there no controversy surrounding Alabama this year? They aren’t playing for a conference championship. They have already been defeated by the team that they will play again—that is if LSU beats Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Seriously, who did the Crimson Tide really beat this year? Arkansas, who beat Mississippi and Vanderbilt by a combined eight points? Penn State, who has no offense whatsoever and an overrated defense that took advantage of a weak schedule and bad Big Ten competition?

Do you want to talk about Alabama’s schedule?

They got victories over Kent State, North Texas and Georgia Southern. Once you get past the Crimson Tide and LSU in the SEC, name one great team in the conference.

The only reason that Alabama will be ranked second when the BCS rankings come out and probably play for a BCS title is because of the name on the side of the helmet.

The Crimson Tide have no more claim to the BCS Championship Game than Boise State, who would have a legitimate beef if Georgia—who the Broncos defeated easily in the season opener—is able to knock off LSU in the SEC Championship.

We have all grown so accustomed to the SEC dominating that whenever there is a one-loss team in the conference, they are going to be given the benefit of the doubt. That is not right, but it is what happens when a conference wins five consecutive titles.

Alabama’s case for being the No. 2 team in the country is not that impressive when you get past the fact that we are talking about Alabama. If we were talking about a Big 12 team with one loss—who wasn't playing in the conference title game—but playing for a national championship, the SEC fans would be livid.

You can’t have a double standard, no matter how much it upsets Alabama fans.
