BCS Rankings 2011: Final Standings Will Show Why a Playoff Is Necessary
When the final BCS rankings come out this year, it’s going to prove that we need a playoff system in college football.
Unless some crazy stuff goes down, LSU and Alabama are going to be the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation and will be playing in a rematch of a regular season game that the Tigers won, but this time for a national title.
That’s just ridiculous.
Why don’t we give teams that haven’t had a chance to play the best yet and have more than earned the right to do exactly that?
Houston is going to go undefeated but will be relegated to a lesser BCS bowl because voters don’t respect their opponents this season. They ignore the fact that Case Keenum is the best QB in the nation right now and plays in an offense that can beat anyone.
Oklahoma State also has an outstanding offense but will be punished for losing to Iowa State in overtime.
Virginia Tech and Stanford are also two teams getting pushed aside because they lost to anyone but LSU even though they weren’t given a chance to play the No. 1 team like Alabama did.
It just doesn't make sense. Having a playoff in place to sort this mess out would be much better than the arguing, the arbitrary voting and stupid computer poll formulas that happen at the end of every season to determine the two national championship contenders.
Why not afford a certain amount of teams that have proven they are consistently great on a weekly basis a way to earn the title over a series of games?
I see nothing wrong with this system and it would be exciting for fans, players and schools. The regular season would still matter because only an elite few teams would be eligible to make this postseason tournament.
I think everyone wins in this situation and it would potentially allow a team like Houston to play LSU, a scenario we will never see with the current regulations.
