BCS Rankings: 5 Week 14 Matchups That Are Completely Overhyped
For the first time since 1999, it appears that Championship Saturday will have no bearing on the national title race. Even the uniform colors in New Orleans are likely not even to be determined, as LSU will probably wear their traditional white jerseys.
Despite Auburn and Oregon both being heavy favorites last year, at least there was some drama heading into the first Saturday of December.
This year, the media will attempt to hype next weekend's slate of games as another intriguing Saturday, but here are five games involving ranked teams that will provide very little drama.
UCLA at Oregon, Friday (8 ET, FOX)
1 of 5The inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game is not what the league had hoped for, but is what many expected with USC on probation and ineligible for the game.
No one expected a .500 team to be playing in the game, but that is the situation as 6-6 UCLA visits 10-2 Oregon.
The Ducks won the last meeting with the Bruins in 2010 by 47 points, and this game will be the biggest mismatch in the history of conference championship games.
Oregon should be able to begin preparations for the Rose Bowl by halftime, while the Bruins will be left seeking a waiver to receive a bowl bid with a 6-7 record.
Southern Miss at Houston, Saturday (12 ET, ABC)
2 of 5This matchup had quite a bit of intrigue two weeks ago, but then the Golden Eagles went to Legion Field and were stunned by a horrendous UAB team that subsequently lost to 0-10 Florida Atlantic.
With the game at Houston, the Conference USA Championship Game now has blowout potential.
The Cougars stand just one win away from their first-ever BCS bowl bid, and even a pesky Southern Miss team won't stand in their way.
Houston survived its biggest test by going to Tulsa and pounding the Golden Hurricane, and the biggest story on Saturday will be Case Keenum's Heisman Trophy chances.
Iowa State at Kansas State, Saturday (12:30 ET, FSN)
3 of 5Iowa State was thrust into the national spotlight when they upset No. 2 Oklahoma State in double overtime.
The Cyclones then went back to being their old selves, falling 26-6 at Oklahoma on Saturday in Norman.
The Wildcats have lost only to the Sooners and Cowboys, and with a chance to potentially lock up a Cotton Bowl berth on their home field, there won't be any letdown against ISU.
Kansas State has had a week off to prepare for the Cyclones, who have little to play for after clinching a bowl bid with the win over Oklahoma State.
Georgia vs. LSU, Saturday (4 ET, CBS)
4 of 5After a slow start against Arkansas, LSU reeled off 41 of the game's final 44 points in a 41-17 rout of the third-ranked Razorbacks that clinched the SEC West title.
The Tigers now head to Atlanta to face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
Because of LSU's schedule strength, which includes wins over three teams ranked in the top three, the Bayou Bengals appear to be headed to the BCS Championship Game regardless of the outcome against the Bulldogs.
The only drama here will be if the SEC can become the first conference to have three teams in the BCS in one season, which will occur if Georgia wins and LSU and Alabama finish No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State, Saturday (8 ET, ABC)
5 of 5The annual Bedlam game between the Sooners and Cowboys will decide the Big 12 title, and that in itself makes it a very important game.
However, this game will be hyped with the mantra that it will help decide the BCS Championship Game matchup.
In reality, it won't. The Cowboys are strong in the computer rankings, but their profile is not strong enough that a win over OU will propel them over 11-1 Alabama or potentially 12-1 LSU should the Tigers fall to Georgia.
The winner is headed to the Fiesta Bowl, but any hopes of a trip to New Orleans were lost this past weekend.
