BCS Rankings Week 14: Houston and Teams Bound to Get Looked over in New Poll

Nicholas GossNov 27, 2011

Houston is one of two undefeated teams in the country but you can guarantee that the Cougars will get screwed in the new Week 14 BCS standings and not be ranked as high as they deserve.

Houston has flown under the radar in recent weeks due to the nation's love affair with the SEC and whether or not an Alabama-LSU rematch is the right BCS title game matchup.

Each week a few teams get underrated and unfairly ranked in the BCS poll, so let's look at who those teams will be in Week 14.

1. Virginia Tech

Despite Arkansas getting trounced by No. 1 LSU, I could still see the Razorbacks finishing ahead of the Hokies in the Week 14 poll.

Arkansas was a full tenth of a point ahead of Virginia Tech in the latest standings and were beaten by the best team in the country by far, which is not a terrible defeat regardless of the score.

The Hokies should also be above Oklahoma State for the fact their one-loss was to a bad Iowa State team and the Cowboys play little defense.

Virginia Tech's defense is only allowing 15.6 points per game this season, which is good for seventh in the nation. Meanwhile the Cowboys have allowed 24 points or more in eight of their 11 games played.

The Hokies are an underrated team that no one will want to play in a BCS bowl, but they will be unfairly ranked in the latest BCS poll.

2. Oklahoma

The Sooners have two disappointing losses but they were beaten by two quality teams. Texas Tech has a very dangerous offense and No. 22 Baylor have one of the country's best quarterbacks in Robert Griffin III.

Oklahoma has beaten some quality teams such as Kansas State, Texas and Texas A&M all rather easily.

The Sooners should really be above Boise State, who are the most overrated team in college football. The Broncos play a weak schedule and lost to a TCU team which is quite inferior to last year's team.

Oklahoma has played a much tougher schedule, beaten more quality opponents and have just one more loss.

Bob Stoops' team won't be respected in the new BCS poll this week after an easy win against Iowa State, but if they beat rival Oklahoma State next week, they will finally earn some BCS respect.

3. Houston

Houston and LSU are the only teams with perfect records this season and while I am not saying the Cougars are as good or even close to the Tigers, they should be higher than eighth in the new BCS standings.

I highly doubt they will be though, which is really terrible since Boise State plays in a similarly weak conference and has one loss.

The Cougars are the nation's best passing team, ranked first in passing yards per game with 449.7. But they are not just one of those system offenses that chucks the ball around all game, they have a running game too.

Houston averages 163.6 yards rushing per game, and are a balanced offense that any team in America would have a tough time stopping. Quarterback Case Keenum is also a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate.

Houston should be ahead of Boise State and Stanford in the new BCS rankings that are unveiled on Sunday, but it is very likely they will not be.
