College Football 2011: Top 5 Teams That Had the Most Disappointing Seasons

Randy ChambersNov 25, 2011

It happens every season. Every year there are teams that receive all of the hype and all of the national attention but fall flat on their faces. It could be because of injuries to key players, a difficult schedule or the simple fact that the teams are just overrated.

Whatever the reason may be, a major team that isn't able to fulfill expectations is disappointing.

Here are five teams that had the most disappointing seasons of all.

Oklahoma Sooners

1 of 5

I give the Sooners a bit of a break because of the injuries to Ryan Broyles and Dominique Whaley but come on. You lose to Texas Tech at home?

Oklahoma was the overwhelming favorite to win the National Championship this season and after another loss to Baylor, there is no chance. The Sooners have a great team but failed to execute against two teams they should have beaten fairly easily.

The Sooners could still earn a BCS bowl but the expectations were title or bust.

Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 5

I know Wisconsin is still in the Top 25 and will likely win the Big Ten and reach a BCS Bowl. That is a great season for most teams but not for one that looked unstoppable and had a great chance to win the National Championship.

It's okay to lose a game or two. Things happen. But when you lose two games in a row and both of them come in the final seconds off of hail mary passes, we have some issues.

The Badgers season may be a successful one but it could have been so much better with a couple late stops.

Notre Dame

3 of 5

Irish fans are beginning to get used to how things work. Notre Dame starts the season off with incredible hype and always fall flat on their faces.

This was supposed to be the year Notre Dame climbed back on top of the college football world and reached a BCS bowl but instead they're 8-3 and barely in the Top 25. This is a veteran team in Brian Kelly's second season yet didn't make much progress.

Notre Dame's won eight of nine but the slow start doomed 2011 to disappointment.

Florida Gators

4 of 5

New head coach, new offensive coordinator, no true quarterback. Yeah, I've heard all of the excuses.

The fact is this team lost four SEC games in a row, including only scoring six points against Auburn. They nearly lost to Vanderbilt and had to actually play hard to come back against Furman.

Who?

I'm sure everybody expected a few bumps in the road but nothing like this. The Gators have a very talented team and will be back sooner than later, but this season has been horrible for Florida fans.

Florida State

5 of 5

Florida State was ranked No. 6 in the preseason polls and everybody was about ready to say the program was on their way to being one of college footballs elite again. Then they lost three straight games and fell off the face of the earth. They went from possible National Championship hopes to out of the Top 25 all together.

After losing at home to Virginia, the Seminoles are sitting at 7-4 and have many fans wondering when this team will become a national powerhouse again.
