Urban Meyer Ohio State: Hiring Is Approaching Brett Favre Levels of Flip-Flop

Richard LangfordNov 24, 2011

Urban Meyer is going to be the next coach of Ohio State. Wait, no he isn't. Well, he actually probably is, but then again maybe not.

Ugh...who cares anymore. Just take the job. We know you are going to do it Urban Favre...er, um Urban Meyer.

Forgive me for the name error, but I am sure you understand. The constant speculations, rumors, reports and light denials are throwing me into ugly "Favre Watch" flashbacks.

Anatomy of Indecision

Meyer and Ohio State have been connected since Jim Tressel resigned while embroiled in scandal just prior to the season. This wasn't due to interest being publicly expressed from either side, but just because it is a natural pairing.

Meyer never admitted, nor denied, interest in returning to the sidelines next season.

Meyer is an Ohio native, and began his career as a graduate assistant on the Ohio State staff. He is one of the premier coaches in college football, and Ohio State is one of the premier jobs.

That speculation turned into rumors last week, and then it was a full-blown reports on Saturday that he had agreed to take the job.

Meyer denied these reports while in the ESPN broadcast booth on Saturday saying, "I've not been offered any job, and I've certainly not accepted any job."

Again, Meyer did not go as far as to say he wouldn't take the job. He simply said he hadn't taken the job yet.

This left everyone to speculation. Then on Wednesday morning The Columbus Dispatch reported hearing from two "well placed sources" that Meyer had agreed to the job, and the two sides simply had to work out a contract.

Shockingly enough, Meyer denied the reports once again. Here is Meyer in a statement release through ESPN:

"

I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place.I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further.

"

Conclusion

Meyer is going to take this job. It makes too much sense, there are too many rumors from sources, and Meyer is too soft in his denial for us to believe any different.

This is simply a negotiating tactic. There is no other reason for Meyer to issue these kinds of statements. Otherwise, he should just say he'll take the job or he won't.

This is the Favre school of negotiation. Instead of playing two clubs off of each other to increase an offer, Meyer is using retirement as the other party.

That is certainly his right, and it is more respectable than outright lying to the public. I'd just prefer not to hear about it. We all know he is going to be the next Ohio State coach. Can we all just drop the drama now?
