BCS Rankings 2011: What a College Playoff Bracket Would Look Like
I love college football, but I am not a purist....or so I'm told. I was told by a self-proclaimed college football purist that, only non-purist want a playoff system.
Well, color me with collegiate impurities because I would go bananas for a 12 team playoff system. The top four teams get a bye, and the teams that are fifth through 12th would compete in first round.
The BCS can still determine the seedings, but the fact that Georgia is possibly the best team in the nation right now, but no shot at the crystal football is unfair. Georgia dropped two games at the beginning of the season and now here they are, settling for a shot at the SEC title game or possibly a BCS bowl berth.
I wouldn't eliminate the rivalry games at the end of the schedules or the conference championships to make room. It would be much more realistic to drop one non-conference and one conference game to keep the kids from playing into February.
Here are the outstanding matchups we would see in the first round:
No. 12 South Carolina at No. 5 Virginia Tech
Were it not for the Marcus Lattimore injury, this could have been a matchup of two of the better, if not best college running backs in the nation, sans Trent Richardson, of course.
No. 9 Oklahoma at No. 8 Houston
Teams in close proximity would battle here. Case Keenum vs. Landry Jones, this would be an awesome stylistic matchup.
No. 11 Kansas State at No. 6 Stanford
Andrew Luck and the Cardinal would host Colin Klein and the Wildcats. This is yet another nice matchup of different styles.
No. 10 Oregon at No. 7 Boise State
Talk about a potentially high-scoring game, with two fringe Heisman trophy candidates as well. Hugely attractive matchup again here.
What an awesome weekend of college football that would be. Mostly because every single game would have national championship implications.
Oh well, it is just a dream.
