Oregon Football: Civil War Moments Continue to Punch Rose Bowl Ticket

Joe PenkalaNov 23, 2011

For the fourth straight season, the Civil War between Oregon and Oregon State will have Rose Bowl implications on the line.

Over the past four seasons, one of these teams has had the ability to make sure they show up in the Rose Bowl and last year it was even an opportunity for the Ducks to punch their ticket to the BCS national title.

Here is a look back at how things have played out recently and a preview of what fans are in store for this year.

2008: Oregon at Oregon State

In 2008, things had set up perfectly for the Oregon State Beavers. They had put themselves in a position that if they could defend their home turf with a victory over Oregon, the Beavers would be heading to the Rose Bowl.

Once the game started, the Ducks had other ideas as they jumped on Oregon State and never let up.

Backed by two long Jeremiah Johnson touchdown runs and a couple defensive scores, the Ducks blasted the Beavers 65-38 and ruined their Rose Bowl chances.

After losing at home the previous year, the Beavers headed to Autzen Stadium in which the winner was going to represent the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl.

While the game went back and forth throughout, it wasn't until the Ducks unleashed LaGarrette Blount on the Beavers defense that the Ducks took control.

Late in the fourth, the Beavers turned the ball over on downs and Oregon ended up driving down the field and running out the clock. The 37-33 victory sent the Ducks to their first Rose Bowl in almost 15 years.

Last year, the Ducks went back on the road and this time, their seat at the Rose Bowl table was already set but they had their eyes on a much larger prize—the national title game.

With their high-flying offense, the Ducks jumped to an early lead and while the game remained close, the Ducks ended up wearing down the Beavers defense and winning 37-20.

This year, the Ducks are at home for the Civil War and the only danger they face is allowing last week's loss to USC to cause them to be unfocused this week.

The Beavers are having a bad year and are at 3-8 on the season. The Ducks are 9-2 and with a win, will clinch the Pac-12 North and host the first conference title game.

If the Ducks can come out and show the focus they have had all year, beating the Beavers is something that should not be too much of an issue.

2011 Prediction

Despite the loss to USC last week, the Ducks have more talent at every key position to win this game going away. The only way that the Beavers could sneak up on the Ducks is if Oregon comes into this game while still thinking about last week's loss.

With the three-headed monster of DeAnthony Thomas, LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, the Ducks should be able to pound the ball and win easily.
