English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 12
This week the Premier League saw one of its undefeated teams fall to the other remaining unbeaten team, an old rivalry was renewed and the bottom two teams in the table scored more goals in their game this weekend than anyone else.
At the top of the table, Manchester City became the last remaining unbeaten club as they defeated previously unbeaten Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United posted victories while Chelsea dropped their match with rival Liverpool.
Wigan and Blackburn may be at the bottom of the table but their 3-3 draw produced the most goals from any single match this weekend.
As always, the number in parenthesis is the club's ranking last week.
20. Fulham (18)
1 of 20Draw No. 5 on the season came on Saturday for Fulham as they were held to a goalless draw away at Sunderland.
Ever since their 6-0 trouncing of QPR at the beginning of October, the Cottagers have only one win and a draw to boast in five games since the rout.
A trip to the Emirates Stadium is up next for Martin Jol and Company on Saturday against Arsenal.
19. Wigan (20)
2 of 20Wigan recorded their first points since August with a 3-3 draw at home with Blackburn.
Jordi Gomez, Gary Caldwell and Albert Crusat netted goals for the Latics in a game where the club lost the lead twice in the second half.
With the draw, Roberto Martinez's club still sit at the bottom of the table with six points.
18. Blackburn (19)
3 of 20Yakubu salvaged a point and a trip to the bottom of the Premier League table on Saturday with a 90th-minute goal against Wigan.
The goal was the Nigerian's second of the game; he scored in the second minute. David Hoilett also scored in the 59th minute in the 3-3 draw.
The result was the second time in three weeks that Rovers played to a 3-3 draw; they drew with Norwich on October 29th by that score.
17. Stoke (16)
4 of 20Stoke's fourth straight loss of the season came at the hands of QPR on Saturday.
Jonathan Walters scored early in the eighth minute but then the Potters defense let in three unanswered goals and their comeback fell short as they could only manage a 64th-minute goal from Ryan Shawcross.
The struggling Potters will host Blackburn on Saturday at the Britannia Stadium.
16. Bolton (15)
5 of 20Bolton could not keep the positive momentum going after their 5-0 rout of Stoke two weeks ago, as they lost to West Brom by a score of 2-1 at The Hawthorns.
Ivan Klasnic scored on a 21st penalty for his sixth goal of the season in the Trotters' ninth loss of the season.
Everton come to visit the Reebok Stadium on Saturday as Owen Coyle's club try to get themselves out of the bottom three.
15. Wolverhampton (14)
6 of 20Wolves could not hold onto their lead on the road at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Stephen Hunt scored the opener for Wolves in the 37th minute but that was not enough, as Everton responded with two goals of their own to hand Wolves their seventh loss of the season.
14. Everton (17)
7 of 20Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines powered the Toffees back from a one-goal deficit to take down Wolves at home on Saturday.
Both of the defenders scored their second goal of the season with Baines' 83rd-minute penalty being the game-winner.
A chance to extend their winning ways to two games in a row awaits at Bolton on Saturday for the Toffees.
13. Swansea City (12)
8 of 20Swansea's three-game unbeaten streak was snapped at home on Saturday by Manchester United.
The 1-0 loss kept the Swans on 13 points and put them in 13th place in the table.
Brendan Rodgers and Company will look to get back on track with a result at home with Aston Villa on Sunday.
12. Norwich City (9)
9 of 20Norwich were the latest victims of Robin van Persie's amazing in-form season, as the Canaries fell 2-1 to Arsenal.
Steve Morison scored his fourth goal of the season in the 16th minute to open the scoring in the match but the Norwich defense could not stop the on-fire Dutchman.
The Canaries host fellow promoted side QPR at Carrow Road on Saturday.
11. Sunderland (10)
10 of 20Sunderland drew with Fulham at home on Saturday.
The goalless match gave the Black Cats points in three out of their last four games.
Now sitting 15th in the table, Sunderland will host Wigan at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
10. West Brom (13)
11 of 20West Brom earned their second win at home by beating Bolton 2-1 at The Hawthorns.
Jerome Thomas scored the opener in 16th minute while Shane Long scored the game-winner in the 56th minute after Bolton equalized in the first half.
The Baggies play their second straight home match on Saturday against third-place Tottenham.
9. Queens Park Rangers (11)
12 of 20QPR's trip to the Britannia Stadium resulted in their third road win of the season as they took down Stoke 3-2.
Heidar Helguson scored twice while Luke Young scored a goal between the Iceland international's fourth and fifth goals of the season.
The win broke the club's two-game losing streak and they will look start a winning streak of their own on the road at Norwich on Saturday.
8. Aston Villa (6)
13 of 20Aston Villa were shut out on the road at Tottenham on Monday night.
The loss dropped the Villains to eighth place and they are seven points behind the seventh-place club Arsenal.
Alex McLeish's club will look to start making gains on that gap when they visit Swansea on Sunday.
7. Chelsea (7)
14 of 20Chelsea suffered their third loss in four games at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.
The loss was also the Blues' second straight loss to a top-seven team after losing to Arsenal on October 29th.
The fifth-place Blues host Wolves on Saturday before a tough two-game stretch against Newcastle and Manchester City to start December.
6. Newcastle (3)
15 of 20Newcastle's unbeaten run ended at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Manchester City.
Dan Gosling scored an 89th-minute goal to avoid a shutout for the Magpies.
Newcastle's toughest stretch of the season so far continues with a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday to face Manchester United before hosting Chelsea in two weeks at the newly named Sports Direct Arena.
5. Liverpool (8)
16 of 20Liverpool took down Chelsea on the road at Stamford Bridge on Sunday thanks to a late winner from Glen Johnson.
Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Johnson's 87th-minute winner.
The win extended the Reds' unbeaten streak to seven ahead of their Sunday clash with Manchester City at Anfield.
4. Manchester United (5)
17 of 20Manchester United won their third straight 1-0 game in Wales on Saturday against Swansea.
Chicharito was the lone goal scorer in the 11th minute to give the Red Devils their ninth win of the season.
Sir Alex Ferguson and Company sit in second place in the table and will host fourth-place Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.
3. Arsenal (4)
18 of 20Robin van Persie led the Arsenal comeback at Carrow Road on Saturday with two goals.
The Dutchman scored in the 27th and 59th minute to bring his total league goals this season up to 13.
The Gunners now get three home games in three different competitions in six days, with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, Fulham in the Premier League and Manchester City in the Carling Cup.
2. Tottenham (2)
19 of 20Emmanuel Adebayor powered Spurs to a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday with his second and third goals of the season.
The win boosted Spurs ahead of Newcastle in the table to third place on goal differential, with both clubs tied at 25 points.
Spurs will look to continue their four-game winning streak at The Hawthorns on Saturday against West Brom.
1. Manchester City (1)
20 of 20Manchester City became the only unbeaten club left in the Premier League after beating previously unbeaten Newcastle at home by the score of 3-1.
Mario Balotelli, Micah Richards and Sergio Aguero all found the back of the net in the 11th win of the season for the Citizens.
Roberto Mancini's club now face three road tests in seven days with a trip to Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday, a game at Anfield with Liverpool on Sunday and then a Carling Cup semifinal at Arsenal next Tuesday.
