BCS Rankings 2011: 5 Teams We Can't Believe We Ever Thought Were Contenders

Alex CallosNov 20, 2011

The opinion of many is that the rankings for all college sports come out a little too early.

This year's college football rankings were no different.

Some teams are ranked a little too high and some a little too low.

Then there are those who are ranked way too high. Teams that had no business being talked about in the national championship conversation like they were before the season.

Here are five teams that should have never been thought of as national championship contenders.

5. Oregon

1 of 5

The Oregon Ducks were ranked No. 3 in the preseason and most people thought they would run the table and play the winner of the SEC for the national championship.

Those people forgot to realize that Oregon has trouble stopping a decent offense, let alone a good one.

While they have not had a bad season and will still likely play in the Rose Bowl, the Ducks have not lived up to expectations.

4. Wisconsin

2 of 5

Wisconsin was ranked No. 10 to start the season and quickly moved into the top five.

Almost everybody thought they would run the table at that point and play for the national championship.

But, for the second year in a row, they were stifled by Michigan State.

To top that off, the Badgers lost to Ohio State the following week and are now struggling to even earn a BCS bowl berth.

3. Oklahoma

3 of 5

The Sooners were the consensus No. 1 at the beginning of the season, but have lost two out of their last four to fall out of contention.

Everybody thought they would win the national championship when the season began and now they need some help to reach a BCS bowl.

The talent is there, they just couldn't put it all together.

2. Texas A&M

4 of 5

Texas A&M was not only expected to contend with Oklahoma for a Big 12 title, but was also expected to contend for a national championship.

After close losses to Oklahoma State and Arkansas at the beginning of the season, they bounced back to win three straight.

Since then, they have lost three and a row and sit at 6-5.

Quite a disappointment for a team that was No. 9 in the preseason rankings.

1. Florida State

5 of 5

Topping the list without question are the Florida State Seminoles.

Florida State was the popular pick to knock off Oklahoma early in the season and play for a national championship.

Once again, they disappointed.

The Seminoles were ranked No. 5 when the season began and now sit at a disappointing 7-4.

They rebounded nicely after three straight losses at the beginning of the season and were back on track until they lost to Virginia over the weekend.

Another disappointing season in Tallahassee, Fla.
