Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Redskins: 3 Reasons the Cowboys Won

Manik AggarwalNov 20, 2011

It is better to be lucky than good. The Dallas Cowboys had no business beating the Washington Redskins in this game. The defense played horribly, the penalty flags were showering the field at inopportune times and the team as a whole gave a struggling Washington team a reason to believe they could win.

Regardless of the rivalry nature of this game, the Dallas Cowboys are a far superior team than the Redskins, especially in their current state without their starting wide receiver, running back and tight end. The Cowboys were fortunate to win today and get away with a series of mental mistakes on the field. So how did the Cowboys eventually win?

1. Tony Romo: He played mistake-free while continuing to make the plays necessary to win the game. The game started off with a strong drive ending with a beautiful grab by Dez Bryant. As the defense continued to struggle and give up points, Romo found a way to get points on the board.

He improvised inside the ten yard line during the Laurent Robinson touchdown, and pulled some silly magic (and chemistry) with Jason Witten during that broken play. Most importantly, he did not make mistakes. When the team needed a crucial third down conversion or a touchdown grab, it was Romo who led them.

He is certainly peaking at the right time, and proving that November is his month.

2. DeAngelo Hall: Some players get cocky on the field to up their game. Some players get cocky on the field when they make the play to win the game. Others, including Hall, get cocky for no good reason.

Thank you DeAngelo for this victory. You got jumped upon on the Bryant touchdown, you gave up on coverage on the Robinson touchdown, you could not catch up on the Witten touchdown, and you got outplayed on the third down conversion in overtime. Thank you.

If the winning team could give game balls to the losing team, you would get one.

3. Luck and momentum: The Redskins came into this game losers of five straight. The Cowboys came into this game winners of two straight. The game started with the Cowboys driving for a score, but then a pretty sloppy two quarters by Dallas.

During that time, the Redskins drove the ball down the field, scored touchdowns, played tremendous on special teams and played mistake-free football. Then, the fourth quarter came. It was sort of déjà vu.

The Cowboys usually play great in the first three quarters and then have a meltdown in the fourth quarter. It was a different story this time.

Dallas escaped Washington with a victory, but more importantly, it uncovered a variety of holes that need to be addressed before December. Fortunately, the upcoming games can allow for some sloppy play, but as December brings the Giants twice, this team must improve their discipline and play on the field.
