Odds for Top 10 BCS Contenders to Make Title Game

William PenfieldNov 20, 2011

With three of the top five BCS ranked teams going down yesterday, the BCS National Championship matchup is very much up in the air.

All signs point to a rematch of the "Game of the Century" between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers.

But that is not a guarantee. Both teams still need to win one or two of those games and, for LSU, those games will be against likely No. 3, Arkansas and SEC East Champion, Georgia.

Here are the odds of the Top 10 BCS contenders of making the BCS National Championship game.

Houston Cougars

1 of 10

Record: 11-0

Remaining games: Sat, Nov. 26: at Tulsa, possible Conference USA Championship game

The Houston Cougars are one of two remaining undefeated teams remaining in college football. But due to their lack of a competitive schedule and not being in an automatic qualifying conference they have zero chance of making the title game, even if they end up undefeated. Many people in Houston will cry foul but they just don't have a BCS resume.

Odds: 20,000 to 1

Boise State Broncos

2 of 10

Record: 9-1

Remaining games: Sat. Nov. 26: vs. Wyoming, Sat, Dec. 3: vs New Mexico

Boise State's national title chances went out the window with the loss against TCU last weekend. As a member of a non-qualifying conference, they seemingly have to go undefeated to even be considered. The Broncos could still get a BCS bid but they would need teams in front of them to lose multiple games in order for them to get into the national title game.

Odds: 2,000 to 1

Stanford Cardinal

3 of 10

Record: 10-1

Remaining games: Sat, Nov. 26: vs. Notre Dame, possible Pac-12 Championship game

When Stanford lost to Oregon last week it seemed as all was lost for the Cardinal. Not only was the BCS National Championship game no longer a possibility but they may not have even made a BCS bowl game.

That all changed when Oregon lost to USC last night.

Now the Cardinal are once again the team with the best record in the Pac-12 and are right back in the middle of things.

But unless Oregon loses again, they will not get a chance to play for the Pac-12 title which will hurt them greatly.

Odds: 750 to 1

Oregon Ducks

4 of 10

Record: 9-2

Remaining games: Sat, Nov. 26: vs Oregon State

After the win over Stanford last weekend, Oregon had a golden opportunity to potentially reach the BCS National Championship game. But after they lost to USC last night, those dreams could be out the window. Now with two losses, the Ducks will need a lot of help to go to the national title game. But if they win out they could still receive a bid to a BCS bowl game.

Odds: 500 to 1

Oklahoma Sooners

5 of 10

Record: 8-2

Remaining schedule: Sat, Nov. 26: vs. Iowa State, Sat, Dec. 3: at Oklahoma State

For a while it looked as though the Oklahoma Sooners were one of the best teams in the nation. But injuries and a few subpar performances proved that wrong. After Oklahoma State lost on Friday, the Sooners title chances took a boost and they responded by losing to Baylor. The Sooners will need a lot of things to go their way to have a shot at the title game now.

Odds: 500 to 1

Virginia Tech Hokies

6 of 10

Record: 10-1

Remaining games: Sat, Nov. 26: at Virginia, possible ACC Championship game

The Virginia Tech Hokies seem to be in the mix of things nearly every year. This is a team that not many people have talked about this season but have put together one of their better years. Although a long shot to reach the BCS National Championship game, they are just a few losses away from entering the picture.

Odds: 200 to 1

Oklahoma State Cowboys

7 of 10

Record: 10-1

Remaining games: Sat, Dec. 3: vs. Oklahoma

The Oklahoma State Cowboys had a golden opportunity to play in the BCS National Championship. Just win out and you're in. But Iowa State did not cooperate and knocked off the Cowboys in double overtime on Friday.

All is not lost in Stillwater, though, with all the Top 10 teams losing. They still have a chance. It is not a very good chance but if they can beat Oklahoma on Dec. 3, they will put themselves in position for at least a BCS bowl bid.

Odds: 100 to 1

Arkansas Razorbacks

8 of 10

Record: 10-1

Remaining games: Fri, Nov. 25: at LSU

The Arkansas Razorbacks have quietly put together one of the best seasons in college football. When the BCS rankings are released later tonight they should capture the No. 3 spot giving the SEC West the top three spots. With its only remaining game against No. 1 LSU, on the road, the Razorbacks have a tough test ahead of them to reach the BCS National Championship game.

Odds: 8 to 1

LSU Tigers

9 of 10

Record: 11-0

Remaining games: Fri, Nov. 24: vs. Arkansas, possible SEC Championship game

The LSU Tigers have been the best team in college football all season long. One of two undefeated teams remaining, you'd think LSU would have the best odds at making the BCS National Championship game but that is not the case. Their remaining schedule is much harder than Alabama's with games against, likely No. 3, Arkansas and then SEC East Champion, Georgia, the Tigers have a hard road ahead of them.

Odds: 2 to 1

Alabama Crimson Tide

10 of 10

Record: 9-1

Remaining games: Sat, Nov. 26: At Auburn

The Alabama Crimson Tide have been one of the best teams all season long. They currently sit at No. 3 in the BCS rankings and will move up to No. 2 when the new rankings are released later tonight with Oklahoma State's loss on Friday.

So at No. 2 how could the Crimson Tide possibly have better odds than LSU? Simply put, if the Crimson Tide beat Auburn, they are all but guaranteed a spot in the BCS National Championship.

LSU still has to win two more games, one against Arkansas and one against SEC East Champion, Georgia. The Crimson Tide's road to the title game is far easier despite being ranked a spot below the Tigers.

Reports have LSU as a virtual lock for the game but the fact is they have more chances to screw up than Alabama. If the Tide win the Iron Bowl, they are in.

Odds: 1 to 2
