BCS Rankings: Upsets Send Standings into Utter Chaos
When you woke up this morning, you knew that the next BCS standings were going to look a lot different. But I bet you did not think they were going to look this different.
Heading into Saturday’s action, there was going to be a great chance of seeing three SEC teams in the Top Five of the BCS standings. However, after tonight’s losses to No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 Oklahoma, it means that No. 6 Arkansas will move into the Top Three of the next BCS standings.
So not only do we have three teams from the same conference as our top three in college football, but all three play in the same division in the SEC.
If that doesn’t give more ammunition into the argument that the SEC is the best football conference, then I don’t know what else they can add on.
On top of losing the top three of the BCS, No. 7 Clemson lost in a horrible blowout to unranked North Carolina State. That loss—plus the three to the top five—have opened up a huge opportunity for a number of teams.
Now, a team like Virginia Tech, who was left for dead with no chance at playing for a BCS championship game, has a great shot to creep back into title contention.
Furthermore, the losses to Oklahoma and Clemson have given life to non-BCS schools Boise State and Houston to play in one of the BCS bowl games. Before this week, both of these teams sat either on the outside of the Top 10 or right at the cusp. Now they will rocket right back into BCS contention, with both teams moving up to No. 6 and No. 7 when the next standings come out.
The BCS is known for having crazy outcomes to their standings. With a loss this late in the season, teams like Oklahoma, Oregon and Oklahoma State have what was a championship season now destroyed.
It’s a cruel way to determine how the NCAA defines who their best team is. However, until the members of the BCS change the system, we have to live by it.
Four teams in the Top 10 of the BCS suffered a cold dish of defeat this week. However, this season is far from over. There are still two more weeks of college football left that can see these BCS standings get scrambled again.
It’s BCS chaos, the likes of which we have never seen before. You may think that you know how the last BCS standings are going to look, but you would probably be wrong.
