College Football Scores: Teams That Killed Lofty Postseason Hopes

Richard LangfordNov 19, 2011

Several teams entered Week 12 with high bowl aspirations and promptly Plaxico Burressed themselves in the leg.

The self destruction began with No. 2 Oklahoma State losing on Friday. With their loss to Iowa State, they can essentially kiss their championship hopes goodbye.

As a small consolation, the Cowboys have company. Here are three other teams that cost themselves on Saturday.

Georgia Southern at No. 2 Alabama

Score: Alabama 45-21

Under normal circumstances, a 24-point victory is a good thing. However, these are not normal circumstances.

Alabama entered this week with a narrow .025 edge over Oregon in the BCS. With the Cowboys' loss, the race for the title game is likely to come down between these two teams.

That means both teams have to take every opportunity they can to impress voters. Allowing 302 yards rushing at 7.7 yards per carry to Southern, while at home, is not going to leave the kind of impression Alabama was looking for.

Compounding the problem for Alabama is the fact that they only have one game left. Alabama will close the season with a game at Auburn and then watch Oregon play in the Pac-12 championship game.

Meanwhile, Oregon has an opportunity to impress today against No. 18 USC before closing the regular season with Oregon State. They will then have a chance to get the final word with the Pac-12 championship game.

If Oregon plays up to their potential in all of these games they will pass Alabama.

Kentucky at No. 14 Georgia

Score: Georgia 19-10

Georgia has been busy rocketing up the rankings. After starting the season 0-2, they have now won nine straight. This had left them with an outside shot at capturing a spot in a BCS bowl game.

While this win secures them a spot in the SEC championship game, it does their bowl hopes no favors.

Georgia only scored 19 points against a Kentucky team ranked 63rd in the nation in points allowed per game. That certainly is not going to help them with voters, and Georgia needed all the help they could get.

They have one regular season game left with Georgia Tech before that SEC championship game. Obviously, if they win that game, all will be forgotten. However, that's not going to happen.

A loss in that game, combined with this poor showing, will ultimately kill their BCS hopes.

No. 7 Clemson at North Carolina State

Score: North Carolina 37-13

Clemson laid the biggest egg of all on Saturday. Their loss marked a sudden change in fortunes for a team that just three weeks ago was undefeated and right in the thick of the battle for the national championship game.

This was Clemson's second loss in three games, and by far, their most damaging. After this humiliating loss to 6-5 NC State, Clemson is now going to plummet down the rankings, and they can forget any hope at playing in a BCS bowl game.
