Kentucky vs. Georgia: Projecting the Bulldogs' Bowl Destination After Win

Matt ShetlerNov 19, 2011

After two weeks into the college football season, two things were apparent.

One: South Carolina would win the SEC East and face either Alabama or LSU in the SEC Championship Game.

Two: After season-opening losses to Boise State and the Gamecocks, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt's seat would be so hot that Georgia would soon be looking for its new head coach.

Fast forward nine weeks and all Georgia has done is reel off nine consecutive victories, saving Richt's job in the process.

After Saturday's 19-10 victory over Kentucky, the Bulldogs have also clinched the SEC East title and now have their sights set on Georgia Tech in the regular season finale.

A win over the Yellow Jackets next week, and we will be talking about a Georgia team heading to a decent bowl game, something many people may have not considered possible when the 2011 season began.

Depending on what happens over the next couple weeks, Georgia could find itself as the SEC's representative in either the Capital One, Outback or Gator Bowls. Playing on or close to New Year's Day is big for a Georgia team that seemed all but down and out early in the season.

Yet, while all of those bowls seem great for the Bulldogs, go ahead and pencil them in for the AT&T Cotton Bowl, to be played at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. While it's not a BCS game, it may be the next best thing for Georgia, who would be matched up against a Big 12 Conference team—possibly Kansas State.

Given the choice of a potentially .500 season and the loss of their head coach or a potential 10-win campaign and an invitation to the Cotton Bowl, I'm sure all Georgia fans would choose the later.

While they are realistically only one LSU upset away from playing in a BCS Game, if that doesn't happen, the Cotton Bowl is a very nice alternative for Georgia.
