Urban Meyer to Ohio State Rumors: Meyer Denies, But We've Heard this Song Before

Jake MartinNov 19, 2011

Reports and rumors are circulating that Ohio State has been talking to Urban Meyer about becoming the new head coach next year.

Meyer denied the report during the Nebraska and Michigan game, but I’m pretty sure we’ve seen this same story before. It’s typical of coaches to deny “rumors” once reports surface, but I still believe those reports have some truth to them. Keyword some.

I’m not buying into the reports of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit tagging along with Meyer and becoming the quarterbacks coach for the Buckeyes.

Although Herbstreit’s love for Ohio State could be seen by a blind man, I just can’t see him as an assistant there. Not only can’t I see it happening, I straight up don’t want it to happen because of how great of a job he does as an analyst with ESPN. But that’s a different column for a different day.

The task at hand is Meyer’s transition to Ohio State, and it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Meyer is a native of Ohio, and what better job for him to take than the premiere university in the state.

Think about it from a competitive point of view. Meyer’s won national championships with Florida and he’s taken Utah to great heights, but what would be better than to resurrect a once prominent program in your home state?

That’s why I’m not buying into Meyer shooting these reports down. By saying that he hasn’t been offered a job, that’s more of him saying nothing’s official just yet.

I still expect Meyer to become the head coach of Ohio State once the season ends, so don’t buy into what Meyer is saying right now.

If Eleven Warriors is accurate with their tweet and reports, this is what is apparently taking place between Ohio State and Meyer.

Meyer and Ohio State have agreed on numbers and in principle to take the new head coaching position, both parties are waiting on the NCAA to deliver its verdict and LSU offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa is expected to take a position on the staff with Meyer.

Those reports are still rumors as of now, but if I were a Florida Gator fan, I would be extremely upset right about now. We all expected Meyer to coach again, but not this early. He retired for health reasons, so I expected him to take at least two years off away from the game and then make his return.

At least he’s not coming back to coach in the same conference like that other coach did in the SEC, it's still somewhat of a slap in the face. Speaking of him, you think rumors will start to surface that Meyer left the SEC to get away from Nick Saban and take an easier route to winning championships?

Knowing the world we live in, I wouldn’t be surprised. After all, it is unbelievably tough to win in the SEC. I’m not going to be buying that rumor though because I really believe Ohio State is one of Meyer’s dream jobs.

Most of this is just speculation right now, but as December draws near, expect more and more details to be released on this coaching change. You have to love this time of the year.
