Urban Meyer to Ohio State? Legendary Coach Needs to Stay Retired
The rumor mill has been running overtime this week, as Urban Meyer and Ohio State were placed in the same sentence. The Buckeyes are dreaming.
For months, Meyer has been rumored to be considering multiple job offers. The reason is simple: The man could have any job that he wants. I am sure he has to turn down five offers to coach on his way from his front door to his car.
It is no wonder that Meyer was featured in Penn State rumors after the Jerry Sandusky scandal dropped. He was considered to be a candidate for Joe Paterno's job this summer, as Paterno was thought to be in his final year anyway.
After the Sandusky bomb dropped, it was a no-brainer to think that Meyer would swoop in and save the day. So far, he has done absolutely no swooping. You can't blame him for not tearing down the door just to take what looks to be the least desirable job in coaching right now.
So, what about another clean-up job in Ohio State? How quickly we forget the immense scrutiny and overhaul that needs to happen with the Buckeyes.
There is no arguing that OSU is one of the greatest programs in the history of college football, but they have some cleaning up to do.
Why would Meyer want to ever pick up a broom again? Coaching a winning program is hard enough without having to wade through the mess that your predecessor just left.
Last week, Meyer gave a statement amidst all the rumors. "I am very happy with my role at ESPN. I have no plans to return to coaching at this time.”
Then came this week with a firestorm of rumblings that Meyer was speaking with Ohio State. The status quo remains, as Meyer is still an ESPN analyst and not a football coach, and he is right to be so.
Two of the historically best jobs in sport are disaster areas right now. Penn State and Ohio State will clean themselves up at some point, and that is when Meyer will pounce. Smart. When you are as wanted as Meyer, the jobs will be there when and if you are ready.
There is nothing wrong in waiting for the perfect opportunity. Right now, that doesn't exist.
