Urban Meyer: Why Former Florida Coach Should Stay in Broadcast Booth

Mikhail TurnerNov 18, 2011

Urban Meyer works for ESPN right now, and that is exactly where he should remain.

Since Meyer left his post as the Florida Gators head coach, there has always been speculation as to when and where he would return to the college game.

For the time being, he has been working in a much less stressful environment. There is no need for that to change.

Meyer has recently been linked with a variety of teams ranging from the Pac-12 through to the Big Ten. If he really means any of what he said when he decided to leave the game, there should still be some time before he returns. If he does.

Here are a few reasons why Urban Meyer should stay in the broadcast booth.

His Family

Urban Meyer has a wife, two daughters and a son. His two daughters are currently NCAA Division 1 student athletes for volleyball.

He made it clear that his decision to leave the game was made mainly for them. To return to the grind of college football after less than a year would be unfair.

Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples wrote about Meyer's resignation and his article revealed one interesting fact. Meyer was never able to see his daughters play their sport in high school. Now that they are in college, you would hope that he would be able to make some games.

Meyer doesn't have his only daughters to think about. His son is young and would surely appreciate the extra time with his father and there is not doubting his wife will be happy to have him home more often.

College football will always be there, but family time will not.

It Has Been Less Than a Year

The picture above is the last picture in the Bleacher Report database that comes up when you type in Urban Meyer.

It was taken on Oct. 23rd of this year when the Miami Dolphins were honoring the 2008 National Championship Gator team. On this same day, Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos were visiting town.

The last picture of Urban Meyer coaching on the sidelines is of course on Jan. 1st when the team played the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Outback Bowl.

At the very least, a whole year or more should pass before Meyer even seriously considers another job. When he initially quit in 2009, it was related to a health scare. Why risk that again?

His Legacy

We all know how good a career Meyer had. After going through various programs as an assistant, Meyer finally landed a head coaching job at Bowling Green State University.

Since that time, he has achieved a winning record at every program he has coached. His overall record stands at 104 wins and 23 losses with a 7-1 record in bowl games. He has coached a number of top college talents who are now playing in the NFL.

He has had to deal with his share of controversy—especially at Florida—but that is not new for any college coach.

It's not like I know the guy personally but his legacy goes just beyond his coaching career. If Meyer turns back on his word so soon it would seem a bit selfish on his part. He recently issued a statement concerning his future and hopefully it remains that way.

Besides all that, he should think about the possibility of entering the game and not having anywhere near the success he previously did. I am not saying it will happen but nobody knows for certain.

The Big Ten Is Not the Place for His Return

4 of 5

There is not a lot to say on this one. I really don't think the Big Ten is the place for Urban Meyer. It would just seem weird.

Both Penn State and Ohio State have been tossed about in the rumors for obvious reasons and there is also a Pac-12 representative in Arizona.

Meyer is a good coach, so to say he wouldn't fit in because of his coaching ability would be foolish. It just seems to me that the Big Ten destinations should definitely be out of the question. That is, if there is any real consideration at all on Meyer's part.

Working for ESPN Is a Pretty Good Deal

5 of 5

This is—to some degree—what Urban Meyer has been a part of recently. Who would want to give this up?

Meyer is definitely used to a lot more hustle and bustle, and it is perfectly natural for him to be a little itchy but a gig with ESPN is a pretty good if you ask me.

Along with the decrease in stress, Meyer can look forward to that extra family time and being able to watch a game or two without losing his mind.
