Penn State Scandal: Rutgers' Greg Schiano Not Interested in Penn State Job

Randy ChambersNov 17, 2011

Ever since the Penn State sex scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky shocked the college football world, we've been discussing who should coach the Nittany Lions football program.

There have been several names tossed out there on who should replace the legendary head coach Joe Paterno but it seems like only a few will be willing to accept the job. Only a handful of people are built to take on such a hard task while the school has a black cloud following them everywhere they turn.

One of the names we can all scratch off the list is current Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. He was a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions in 1990 and was the defensive backs coach from 1991-1995. He loves the university and like everybody else was saddened to hear the news of what happened and the firing of head coach Joe Paterno.

Since he has ties to the university, many were considering him a potential replacement for Paterno but he has said he is not interested.

“I’m only interested in one job and that’s the one I have right now,” Schiano told Bill King of 247Sports Radio.

Normally when you hear a head coach say he is not interested, it'd be hard to believe what he says. Every coach has said he's not interested in a job, only to leave the next week. This one is a little easier to believe as the Penn State job under these circumstances is not for everyone.

Schiano has done a solid job coaching the Rutgers, leading them to a 66-66 record and a 4-1 bowl record from 2005-2009. He was a candidate for the head coaching jobs in Miami and Michigan but decided to stay with the program he's been with since 2001.

Penn State will have to continue looking, as this coaching search looks to be a long journey.
