Chelsea vs. Liverpool: 10 Players to Watch

Allan JiangNov 17, 2011

Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge knowing they've scored eight times in the last five away games against Chelsea

In the last five meetings between the two clubs, Liverpool have only lost once.

Chelsea's defence has been an Achilles' heel and it's up to Luis Suárez to exploit it.

Fernando Torres will look to make up for his first game against Liverpool where he was rendered useless by Jamie Carragher.

This article will analyse Suárez, Torres and eight other players in this monumental clash on Sunday.

Fernando Torres

1 of 10

People often forget that if not for Jamie Carragher's last-ditch block, Fernando Torres would have scored in his debut against his former club.

Instead Carlo Ancelotti showed his hand and humiliated Torres by subbing him off.

Unsurprisingly, Torres was reduced to a bit part player under Ancelotti's reign.

One of the worst misses of all time against Manchester United and somehow failing to score right in front of goals against Blackburn Rovers hasn't helped Torres' cause. Though there is some renewed optimism, as he has scored four goals and provided three assists.

If for whatever reason he doesn't play well against Liverpool, he must follow up on his promise

Luis Suárez

2 of 10

An unhappy Chilean squad, combined with Uruguay coming out to play, enabled Luis Suárez's brilliance.

In case you are unaware of what I'm talking about, Suárez scored four goals against Chile—a left-footed goal, a right-footed goal and two headers.

As amazing as Suárez was, this Chilean side was always set to lose because Arturo Vidal, Carlos Carmona, Gonzalo Jara, Jean Beausejour and Jorge Valdivia were all sent home for breaking curfew—they attended a baptism; it wasn't as if they were partying with strippers.

Oh and Alexis Sánchez was injured just before the game started.

I still don't care because watching Suárez once again reaffirmed to me how complete of a forward he is.

He tracks back (so much so that he strained a muscle), he has vision, his dribbling ability is up there with the best and he is a prolific goal scorer.

One does wonder how the racism charge will affect Suárez on Sunday.

Comment below with what you think.

John Terry

3 of 10

Unlike Luis Suárez, John Terry is in a whole heap of trouble because he was caught red handed using racially vilifying language.

You might ask me why don't I have the same stance with Suárez.

Don't you find it odd that in a Liverpool vs. Manchester United game, not one media outlet could produce video evidence of Suárez allegedly racially vilifying Patrice Evra?

Yet hours after the Real Madrid vs. Barcelona game and Chelsea vs. QPR game, video evidence of Sergio Busquets and Terry allegedly using racial language was produced and shown around the world.

Stewart Downing

4 of 10

Hopefully for Stewart Downing's sake, Kenny Dalglish was watching England vs. Sweden.

Downing had Mikael Lustig in sixes and sevens; what a beautiful cross from the Liverpool winger to create England's goal.

Downing hasn't been pulling his weight for Liverpool and has drifted in and out of games, but let's see what he can do against Chelsea.

Juan Mata

5 of 10

Why is Juan Mata being played as a wide forward when he doesn't provide width and drifts into the centre?

Not to mention Mata's tendency to give himself a pass on defensive duties.

Play him centrally and Fernando Torres' chances of scoring increase.

Lucas

6 of 10

It's so weird watching Lucas play for Brazil...I know the late Telê Santana wouldn't have played Lucas.

I remember lambasting Lucas week in, week out when he first started appearing for Liverpool.

Since then, he has gained confidence, mastered the art of being a defensive midfielder and become a good role player for Liverpool.

He knows his limitations; he knows if he doesn't give it his all, he is expendable, hence why he runs himself into the ground.

When Juan Mata drifts into the centre, it is up to Lucas to stick to the Spaniard like glue.

Frank Lampard

7 of 10

Liverpool is Frank Lampard's fifth favourite team to score against—having scored eight times in 40 games (33 of which for Chelsea).

During the season, Lampard has come under unwarranted criticism, where some Chelsea fans were critiquing him for slowing down play even though statistics proved he was leading the league in creating chances.

Since then, he has proved his critics wrong with a string of fine performances.

Steven Gerrard

8 of 10

Steven Gerrard has talked about his fears of not winning a Premier League title, but I also wonder how much he fears not being the man at Liverpool—Luis Suárez has taken up that mantle.

Gerrard may not play due to an ankle injury, however unless he can't walk, I'd be surprised if Gerrard's name wasn't on the squad sheet.

David Luiz

9 of 10

No point shielding David Luiz from Luis Suárez.

Start Luiz and see if he can defend against a world class forward.

My mind says that against Suárez, Luiz is a red card waiting to happen.

My heart says that Luiz can nullify Suárez.

Though I still harbour the hope that Luiz can move into midfield.

Andy Carroll

10 of 10

Andy Carroll needs to be a nuisance towards the opposing centre backs, press forward and use his 6'3" frame to block, shield and divert attention away from Suárez.

Liverpool are stuck with Carroll; rather than whine about the fact he can't play like a £35 million valued forward, they should think positive and force him to sacrifice his statistics to enable Suárez to work his magic.
