NBA Lockout: 10 NBA Records That Won't Fall This Year

Brian MaziqueNov 17, 2011

The reality of missing an entire NBA season is really a tough pill to swallow. Even the eternal optimist has to be doubting we'll have even a 50-game season to satiate our basketball jones.

So, along with all of the excitement, thrills and drama, we will also miss out on some possible milestones and record breaking performances.

There is a chance that some of the more rare but significant individual and team records could have been challenged this year.

Here are 10 that are sure to be safe with a 50-game season, or none at all.

Most Wins by a Team

1 of 10

Many predicted the Heat could challenge the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls all-time wins mark last season, but that was too soon in their union. The pieces needed time to become better accustomed to playing together and roles need to be defined more clearly.

This would have been the year for things to potentially come together for them. Even if a season of some sort is saved, 72 wins is impossible. A 50-game season is about the best any one can hope for.

Even if Miami were to match the Bulls win percentage of .880 and win 44 out of 50, no one would give it nearly the same respect. LeBron would have to win 82 out of 82 to get any credit from his detractors, and somehow I think they'd find a way to criticize that as well.

Most Wins in First 2 Full Seasons as Coach

2 of 10

Believe it or not, no coach has won more games in their first two seasons than Avery Johnson. In Johnson's first two full seasons he won 127 games. He went 16-2 with the Mavericks when he took over in 2005.

When he was captain of the ship from beginning to end, he won 60 in the 2005-2006 campaign and 67 the following year.

Chicago Bulls head coach, Tom Thibodeau, had a real shot at breaking or matching that record. His Bulls won 62 games last year. With a 65-win season, he'd tie Johnson. With a 66 win season, he'd have more wins than any coach through their first two seasons.

He could still accomplish it, if the season was lost all together. Even in an abbreviated season, you could remove the shortened season from consideration and look at the 2012-2013, but that gets all goofy.

Bottom line: this is another thing the NBA lockout is ruining.

Most Consecutive Wins by a Team

3 of 10

Were the Miami Heat or any other team, hot enough and good enough to go on a mega run, they would be in their share of press conferences. That is one thing the 1972 Lakers didn't have to contend with when they won 33 games in a row that year.

Though this type of run is unlikely, even for one of the year's favorites, it is near impossible in a 50-game season.

Most Points Scored Before the Age of 24

4 of 10

Kevin Durant began his career as one of the game's top scorers and he hasn't looked back since. Now at 23, he had the chance to become the most prolific scorer, before the age of 24, in NBA history.

From 2003-2008, LeBron James scored 10689 points. Durant currently sits at 8121, he would have had to average 31 points per game for 82 games to catch the King.

It would have been difficult without the canceled or shortened season, obviously impossible now.

Consecutive 50-Win Seasons

5 of 10

The Dallas Mavericks are the defending NBA champions, but they are also in the midst of a pretty impressive streak. The Mavericks have won at least 50 games every year since the 2000-2001 season. That is 11 years in a row.

If there were a season this year, they could have equaled the Lakers' mark of 12 consecutive 50-win seasons from 1979-80 to 1990-91.

That won't happen unless the season is canceled, or the Mavericks go undefeated in a 50-game season.

Most 3-Pointers Made in a Season

6 of 10

Ray Allen holds the single season record for most three-point field goals made in a season with 269. Dorell Wright led the league last year with 194, but there are tons of great three-point shooters in the game.

It would take a combination of a great shooter, playing in an offense that encourages the bomb. Oh, and an 82-game season.

Most Points Scored in a Season by a Team

7 of 10

The 1981-82 Denver Nuggets average 126.5 points per game. They scored a total of 10,371 points that year. The closest thing to that in last year's NBA was 8,374 total points from the New York Knicks.

It isn't likely that the Knicks or any other team will score like that, but they especially won't get it done in 50 games or less.

Most 3-Pointers Made by a Rookie

8 of 10

Stephen Curry set the NBA record for three-pointers made in a rookie season in 2009-2010 with 166. Jimmer Fredette and Curry's new teammate, Klay Thompson may have had a chance at challenging that mark in a full season.

The record could still fall if the season is canceled all together.

Most Home Wins

9 of 10

Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls were nearly unbeatable last year at home. They were 39-2 at the United Center, second only to the 1985-86 Boston Celtics, who were a ridiculous 40-1 in the Boston Garden.

The chances are slim the Bulls could have duplicated their success, let alone challenge the Celtics' mark, but I would love to see them try.

Consecutive Coach of the Year Awards

10 of 10

Here is another fact that is a little hard to believe, no coach has ever won consecutive NBA Coach of the Year awards. Larry Brown pulled the trick in the ABA, but not in the NBA.

It seems especially unlikely for Thibs. His team won 62 games last year and had the best record in the regular season—what accomplishment could they pull off that would speak volumes to his coaching?

Well, if the Bulls are beset with injuries again this season—as they were last year—then it would be a possibility, but with no season, there are no possibilities.
