BCS Championship Game: No Rematch, Please!
The college football purist is dreading what could be on the horizon if Oklahoma State is unable to run the table for the remainder of the season.
There may not be many purists left that favor the current format over any type of playoff situation—but regardless of what stance you choose to take on that matter, does anyone truly want to see any type of rematch for the BCS Championship?
If you are a fan of Oregon or Alabama, the answer is almost certainly yes. But if you are just a college football fan, do you really want to see these potential matchups once again?
Making the old case that every week is a playoff in college footbal, the answer may be no.
Everyone assumes that Alabama would be next in line for the rematch against LSU (if they remain unbeaten), but since we just saw that a little over a week ago, do we need to see it again so soon?
Another scenario remains—with the Ducks win over a previously undefeated Stanford team, Oregon could close the gap considerably on the Crimson Tide when tonight's BCS Standings are released.
Still with a game against USC next week and a probable Pac-12 Championship game against nothing more than an average opponent, could that be enough for the Ducks to leapfrog Alabama?
Even in that case, didn't we already see that in Week 1?
I'm all for the best two teams meeting for the title, but how can you realistically claim that a one-loss Alabama or Oregon is better than a one-loss Oklahoma or Oklahoma State (if they should lose a game). You can take it a step further and include Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Boise State and Clemson in the mix just for argument purposes.
Stanford lost on Saturday and Boise State didn't help their cause at all by beating themselves for the second straight season with a badly missed field goal. The way things may play out, this could have been the season that the Broncos really made their case by finishing undefeated.
As it stands right now, there are only three undefeated FBS teams in LSU, Oklahoma State, and Houston; only LSU and Oklahoma State have a shot to reach the BCS Championship Game.
Don't assume that LSU is out of the woods just yet. They still have to finish the season with Arkansas and likely Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
The next three weeks of the college football season promises to be a crazy sprint to the finish.
Everything will be normal if Oklahoma State and LSU remain on track to meet in the BCS Championship Game.
The opportunity to see the Cowboys offense against that LSU defense promises to be more entertaining than any possible rematch we have already seen before.
