LSU Football: Which Top 10 Teams Could Beat the Tigers?

Jim SullivanNov 13, 2011

The Tigers are the top team in the nation. Everyone wants to be them, play like them, and wear their uniforms (especially the gloves). However, there is also a giant target on their backs that everyone else is aiming for, and LSU needs to watch out.

The rest of the Top 10, including Alabama, is waiting for their chance, or second one, to take on the Tigers and take them down. Of the other nine on the list, only a few match up, and of those few, only a couple really have a chance.

The Tigers' potent defense and consistent offense seem unstoppable, but anyone can beat anyone else on any given day. Question is, who is that anyone for the Tigers, and when can they face them?

We take a look at the rest of the Top 10 and which teams have any shot at taking down our nation's unanimous No. 1 squad once the season ends.

No. 7 Virginia Tech

1 of 5

Virginia Tech is the top-ranked team in the ACC, only losing to Georgia Tech in what has been proved to be a fluke game for the Hokies. QB Logan Thomas has been impressive, particularly after the 23-3 loss to Clemson.

As great as the Hokies are in the ACC, their conference isn't the SEC, and the Tigers would crush them nine times out of 10. Frank Beamer is an old-time coach who could match up against Les Miles, but the talent on the LSU defense is more than the Hokie offense could manage.

The only way these two would match up is if everyone above V-Tech fell and the Hokies went on to the National Title game.

Tigers take the game easily, 31-14.

No. 4 Oregon

2 of 5

The Ducks looked extremely impressive against the Cardinal yesterday, defeating them easily in what was predicted to be a tough road game. Oregon has one of the strongest offenses in the nation, using QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James perfectly.

It would be interesting to watch this powerful offense face off against the stagnant LSU defense, especially considering this would be a rematch of the season opener. The only way this game happens is if the Ducks advance to the title game in New Orleans.

The (somewhat) home field advantage gives LSU the edge, defeating Oregon 35-24

No. 5 Oklahoma

3 of 5

The Sooners are a tough team to face for anyone, only having a really bad fluke game against Texas Tech. Since then, OU has crushed K-State and Texas A&M, making a statement and a bid for the national title.

In this game, the deciding factor will be the loss of WR Ryan Broyles. Without him, QB Landry Jones will have a tough time getting the ball down field, which would have in turn opened up the running game. Without the running game, OU won't be able to move the ball very well, especially against the tough LSU defense.

This national title game would be exciting on the defensive side of the ball, but the Sooners would eventually crack.

LSU takes the game 27-7.

No. 6 Arkansas

4 of 5

Fortunately for the Razorbacks, they won't have to take on LSU in a BCS Bowl game. Unfortunately, however, the Tigers' SEC rivals have to travel to Death Valley to face them, which certainly doesn't help their cause.

The Arkansas offense has been strong all year, struggling only a few times to score points. The defense, on the other hand, has performed well mostly in the second half. Against the Aggies in Dallas, they allowed 35 first half points and only three second half points. When they took on Vanderbilt, they forced a huge turnover that they ran back for a TD, saving the Razorbacks from a loss.

Arkansas should be one of the teams who the Tigers should worry about, even though they take them on at home. The LSU offense will have to perform well, while the defense must be stagnant against a great QB in Tyler Wilson.

LSU would win a tight game, 24-17 at home.

No. 2 Oklahoma State

5 of 5

Oklahoma State is the surprise BCS team of the year, winning many close games early and pulling out big time victories over tough opponents. Now, they are in the position to face LSU in the biggest game of their university's history.

The Cowboys own one of the best offensive duos in the country with QB Brandon Weeden and WR Justin Blackmon. They are dangerous and will create many opportunities for themselves in the LSU secondary. Randle has also performed admirably so far this season for OSU, running the ball just when the defense doesn't expect it.

The LSU offense will have trouble against a defense who seems to know exactly when it needs to perform, making big stops or turnovers just when their offense needs them. As consistent as the Tiger offense is, it will be tough to pull this one off.

The game will come down to the wire, finishing on a field goal by either one of the teams.

LSU can pull this win out, though, taking the game 17-14.
