College Football: Why This May Finally Be the Year That Destroys the BCS
Yesterday, college football experienced what can only be described as chaos.
This week the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and seventh-ranked teams were upset. There are now only two remaining undefeated teams left in college football, LSU and Houston. There are six one-loss teams as well: Oklahoma State, Alabama, Arkansas, Boise State, Stanford and Virginia Tech. The top three spots in the rankings are all now occupied by teams that play in the SEC West.
Whoa. We've talked about the potential of one team getting left out of the NCAA national title game, but what about now?
LSU obviously is in if they win out, but who else? Alabama seems to be the most logical choice, but they've already lost to LSU, shouldn't another team get an opportunity? Besides can a team who doesn't even win their division really be considered for the national championship game?
How about Oklahoma State if they win out and win the Big 12? Logic says their loss to Iowa State means their out of the running for the national title game, but should their loss carry more weight than others because they lost later in the season? Or does it all have to do with quality of opponent?
Stanford and Virginia Tech have only one loss, why shouldn't they be considered for the title game at this point if they win their respective conference? How about Houston? After all, they still haven't lost a game this season.
Then there is the scenario if LSU loses next week to third-ranked Arkansas. In that scenario LSU would have beaten Alabama, Alabama would have beaten Arkansas and Arkansas would have a win over LSU. Explain to me how it's possible to pick two of those three teams that should play in the championship?
The only logical way would be to put these teams in a playoff format. Have them duke it out and decide the winner. The argument that "every week is a playoff" in college football is looking more and more irrelevant every year. When Alabama can lose to LSU and get a rematch, how did that game mean anything at all? If you can win all of your games and not a get a shot, how is every week a playoff? It just makes no sense.
BCS supporters will have a hard time explaining to the masses how this system makes sense after this season. At least one, and probably multiple teams will have legit claims at a BCS national championship opportunity but not be invited to participate.
Across the country now there has been rumblings about a possible future change to the BCS system in the near future. Even President Obama has expressed his displeasure with how college football decides its champion. At some point something has to occur that makes someone finally take action, and this season might very well be that time. The system is broken, a change needs to be made. Just ask Stanford, Virginia Tech, Houston and Oklahoma State at the end of the season.
