Urban Meyer Penn State: Former Florida Coach Wise to Avoid Nittany Lions Job
Urban Meyer did not leave on a high note from the University of Florida. His team did not play as well as his famous teams with Tim Tebow. But his image was left intact: as a great coach who brought in one of the best character players in the history of college football in Tebow. So it’s why Meyer needs to stay away from that horrible situation in Penn State.
According to the Orland Sentinel, Coach Meyer released a statement through ESPN that was tweeted out, which said that he was very happy with his role at ESPN and he has no plans on returning to coaching.
Penn State is just a toxic waste dump right now. Anything that is related to it the program is toxic, anybody related to the coaching staff is someone to stay away from and no one even wants to associate themselves with Penn State as a whole. So why would Urban want to leave his nice studio job at ESPN to try and revive this program that will have this stigma attached to it?
Not even Urban can fix this situation at Penn State. Even if he were to bring the next Tim Tebow into the college world at Penn State, it would not be enough to make the football program escape the large dark shadow that is the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
Urban is wise to stay away, as there will be bigger and better jobs that he can walk right into and revive the program.
Let’s say a spot opens up like Ohio State if they decide to not bring back Coach Fickell after his interim period. Yes, Ohio State is still suffering from their NCAA and their own Sanctions after what happened in the offseason, but the situation is not even close to being as bad as Penn State.
Maybe Urban is watching his health, as going right into Penn State only a year after he had to leave coaching because of a bad health would be a bad move for him and his family.
Florida was a high-pressure spot, playing in the high-pressure South Eastern Conference. So why would the former coach want to risk his health trying to be the person who resurrects the Penn State program?
Penn State needs to start over with a no-name coach who can come in under the radar. Having Urban Meyer coach there will just bring extra attention to what happened in the past, as Urban will look as the savior.
Urban does not need that pressure, and Penn State does not need that spotlight.
