Penn State Scandal: Graham Spanier Is Reportedly out as President of Penn State

Gabe ZaldivarNov 9, 2011

The Penn State scandal assures that the university will never be the same as it was before allegations against Jerry Sandusky surfaced. Those in power continue to fall by the wayside, and President Graham Spanier seems to be next on the chopping block.

Jim Gardner of ABC News Philadelphia has issued a tweet reporting Spanier is out as Penn State president.

It is apparent Penn State officials are clearing house from the top down. Earlier in the day we received word that head coach of the Nittany Lions Joe Paterno would retire at the end of the season.

That decision has apparently come from Paterno and Paterno alone. If the board of trustees or other officials plan on forcing Paterno out, his preemptive decision should hardly figure into the time and manner that they would deal with him.

The New York Daily News reports Spanier was hit with an ultimatum from the board of trustees that was simple and powerful: He was to either quit or be fired. It seems former president Spanier opted to resign and skirt the added embarrassment of being fired.

Spanier was relatively quiet during what has been the most scandalous week to ever hit a college campus. He did manage to issue a statement in support of supported former athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz.

Spanier was allegedly told that Mike McQueary, then a graduate assistant, saw Sandusky involved in deplorable actions. Spanier has denied being told that those actions were ever sexual abuse.

It's now clear that Penn State board of trustees are siding with the allegations that he did know at least enough that the police should have been called to investigate what looks to be the sexual abuse of 20 or more little boys by Sandusky.

The report states that Rodney Erickson, executive vice president and provost at the university, is the leading candidate to take over as interim president of a university that is engulfed in scandal at the moment.
