College Football's 50 Most Impatient Fanbases

Martin SondermannNov 8, 2011

College football is a game of passion, heart, blood, sweat, and tears.  It provokes the inner most competitive animal, and riles the calmest of spirit.

When a team wins and continues to win, there is nothing greater.  The fans celebrate, cheer, and carry their heroes on their shoulders in a glorious act of triumph.

However, there is a dark side.  There is a heart breaking, teeth clinching, veins in the neck popping, sinister side that turns even the loyalist of fan into raging critic hell bent on seeing the target of his fanatic rage eliminated.

In other words; Fire that coach!

Some schools and their fans seem to patiently endure, while others are ready to kick their leader to the curb at the first sight of weakness.

This is their story, and no names have been changed to protect the innocent.

No.50 Kentucky

1 of 50

U.K.= Un-known... Some might not realize Kentucky has a football program, but they do.  Now, don't get upset Kentucky fans, it's rare when a school is good in basketball and football.

Seriously, we know Ohio State.  Ohio State is a friend of ours.  You, Kentucky are no Ohio State.  However, your fans can sure act like it.

It seems no matter what happens, you can find a Kentucky fan complaining.  They are 4-5 this year, and 1-4 in the SEC, and fans are already calling for a new coach.

Kentucky fans, you do realize you play in the SEC, you don't need a new coach, you need a new conference.

No.49 Northern Illinois

2 of 50

Northern Illinois fans are impatient for a different reason.  They want their program to be a big time program right now.

You can't blame a team for wanting to be the next "TCU" or "Utah" or "Boise State", but that doesn't happen overnight.

Earlier in the year when the team lost to Kansas and Wisconsin in back to back weeks, fans were complaining and griping about the tragedy of it all.

N-I-U, WE-C-U... complaining when you shouldn't.  Patience young grasshopper.

No.48 Northwestern

3 of 50

Three weeks ago Northwestern fans were calling for a new coach.

Today... not as much.  After two back-to-back wins, the Northwester complainers seem to have gone south for the winter.

They beat Indiana and Nebraska, with Rice on the horizon.  It looks like the calls for a new coach will calm down a bit before the Minnesota game.  After that, the storm might start brewing again.

No.47 Iowa

4 of 50

It's fun to play at the I-O-W-A!

6-3 and yet some fans are calling for change in Hawkeye land.  That is probably because of losses to Iowa State, ouch, Penn State, and Minnesota, huh?

Even with victories over Pitt and Michigan, some fans are never satisfied.

No.46 Tulsa

5 of 50

Another school with a little brother complex.

Fans from Tulsa have hit the blog circuit.  They are starting to becoming a bit annoying.  Which, you know what that means?  Welcome to the big boys table.

Tulsa wants to be in the conversation, well your in it.  However, its not because you beat big brother one or big brother number two.  With loses to OU and OSU, little brother has some growing up to do.

They want to be like Boise State, but they lost to them too.

They did beat SMU, so at least they show they are growing up.  However, fans don't sound like that is enough.  To that we say... good for you Tulsa fans.  Keep pushing your team.

No.45 Rice

6 of 50

Rice fans seem to be a bit steamed these days.  A sticky situation is brewing for the Owls.  Who? The Owls... Who?  The Owls...

It seems like the coaching staff has been in a pressure cooker all season with losses to Texas, Baylor, Southern Miss, Marshall, Tulsa, and Houston.

We will see if the fans are patient enough to make it through the season, or if their nerves will just be fried.

No.44 Western Michigan

7 of 50

Western Michigan fans are just like any other.  They want their team to succeed.  They are good fans, but have been known to lose heart too fast.

Then again, so has their team.  Maybe the two are related?

Keep the faith Bronco fans, you team is getting better.  Even in the face of a Toledo loss.

No.43 New Mexico

8 of 50

New Mexico fans, you almost feel bad for saying they are impatient at all.  They have endured so much.

However, just like others on our list, you can't always be good at football and basketball.  However, you could at least try.

The only team worse in the entire FBS is New Mexico's second string, and we are not even sure about that.  0-9 that's right... 0-9.

New Mexico fans no one can blame you for being a bit impatient.  You probably should have been that way years ago.

No.42 Temple

9 of 50

Temple fans are the kind you have to love.  Passionate, wanting to win, and completely delusional.

Temple fans have a way of thinking way too high of themselves and their program.  Maybe its the name... "Temple".  A place of worship.  Maybe they think others should bow to them or something?

Whatever the case, the Temple Owls... Who?  Wait, that joke is old.  The Temple Owls fans are wise enough to know that they have some growing to do before they reach worship status.

No.41 UTEP

10 of 50

You have the uniforms, but the helmets could use a makeover.  You have the attitude, and no shortage of confidence.  Now, you just need the wins that go along with it.

UTEP fans have had a taste of the good life, and they want more.

You can't blame fans of the Miners for wanting to succeed.  However, you know the old saying; Utep up in competition, and utep into a whole new world.

With a 1-4 record in Conference USA, UTEP fans have more than "miner" complaints.

No.40 UAB

11 of 50

UAB fans are impatient, but you can't blame them.  A 1-8 overall record would burn you too.

The only question is why aren't those same fans blazing mad instead of mildly disturbed?

No.39 Michigan State

12 of 50

Michigan State fans are some of the most loyal around.  They celebrate every win with passion and extremes.

However, it seems that every loss brings another set of angry online posts griping about the coach, the staff, the players, or even their mothers.

You are 7-2 on the year Spartan fans, in case you didn't know it.

No.38 Wisconsin

13 of 50

Oh the Badger fan.  Their team is the greatest until they lose one game, and then you would think someone died.  Lose two in a row, and you are convinced someone did.

There were calls for the firing of the coach this year after loses to Michigan State and Ohio State in back-to-back weeks.  This after winning the first six games of the year.

Now that's the kind of passion college football needs.

No.37 Purdue

14 of 50

Purdue fans want to win, and that is perfectly understandable.  Let's just "hope" they can make it through the season without blowing off too much steam.

Losses against Rice, Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, and Wisconsin have probably put a damper on things for the Boilermakers football season.

However, let's just hope that they can rebound and make a bowl game.  With calls for lots of change already, a loss to Ohio State might bring the train to a screeching halt.

No.36 West Virginia

15 of 50

With proof that the fans aren't the only impatient ones in Morgantown, the administration wants to bolt a conference a year before they can contractually.

What a great lesson to teach your students.  Contracts mean nothing.  Loyalty means nothing.  Money, that's what makes the world go round.

No.35 Iowa State

16 of 50

Iowa State fans no one can blame you for being impatient.  However, that win over Texas Tech this year was a nice surprise.

Beating Iowa had to feel good, and it probably made a less-than-average season bearable.

No.34 Texas A&M

17 of 50

Texas A&M Note:

See West Virginia

No.33 New Mexico State

18 of 50

You should be impatient.

No.32 Fresno State

19 of 50

Calls for Pat Hills job are getting louder by the day.  The only problem is the school may not have the money to get rid of him.

No.31 California

20 of 50

So Cal football fans are calling for change, but it may not be in the books... financial books, that is.

The win over Washington State helped, and so should a win over Oregon State.  However, Stanford will not be much fun for you.

Cal fans are becoming more and more impatient, but the coaching contract in place may not allow them any kind of change anytime soon.

No.30 SMU

21 of 50

SMU fans winning sure helps doesn't it?  For years they have been impatiently waiting for this day.  When their football team would rise from the ashes and become relevant again.

Well, the time has come.  Now, we will have to see how they do in the Big East, since it looks like that's where they are headed.

No.29 Nebraska

22 of 50

No one can blame you.

No.28 Minnesota

23 of 50

People in Minnesota are supposed to be nice.  Unless of course, you are talking about Golden Gopher football fans.

There are calls for change in Gopher land don't you know.  Fans have been rumbling since a week 2 loss to New Mexico State.  Yes, that's right, that New Mexico State.

No.27 Pitt

No.26 Georgia Tech

25 of 50

Georgia Tech fans are officially crazy.  A good crazy, but crazy nonetheless.

The win over Clemson helped a lot, but with losses to Virginia and Miami back-to-back, you would think the world was coming to an end.

With another good one against Virginia Tech coming this week.  It will be interesting to see what happens, and how Georgia Tech fans react.

No.25 Washington State

26 of 50

You should probably have been more impatient years ago.  However, it is nice to hear WSU fans complaining this year after five straight losses.

No.24 Florida State

27 of 50

Wow, wouldn't you hate to coach for these fans?  Three losses in a row and they were ready to unload.  However, the four wins in a row since then have calmed the hurricane for now.

That is, until this week when a different hurricane comes calling.

If FSU loses, how fast do you think the fans call for a change?

No.23 Tennessee

28 of 50

When your used to winning nearly every game you play, it is understandable that fans could be impatient when losing.

However, Tennessee fans could probably be a little more patient with this coach.  Give him time, and he will return your Volunteers to glory.  Cut him lose and he'll do it somewhere else.

No.22 Arizona State

29 of 50

One loss to a inferior UCLA team and you would think the ASU fans had lost a puppy.

ASU fans, your team is 6-3, in case the sun was in your eyes.  Tough losses against Illinois and Oregon were somewhat acceptable to fans, but this last one seems to have struck a nerve.

Be a little more patient, your season is not over.

No.21 Tulane

30 of 50

Tulane fans were hopeful when their team started 2-1.  However, seven losses in a row later, and it's a wonder those same fans haven't stormed the castle.

No one is green with envy over this team's offense, defense, or special teams.  Other than that their team is just fine.

Tulane fans, impatience looks good on you.

No.20 Maryland

31 of 50

Maryland fans have nothing merry in their land these days.  The fans have become increasingly impatient after a questionable uniform launch and seven losses in nine games.

Fear the turtle?  Maybe not... but fear the fans of Maryland.  They are impatient, and who can blame them?

No.19 Syracuse

32 of 50

Note:

*See Pitt

*See West Virginia

*See Texas A&M

No.18 Auburn

33 of 50

You can't win every year... sheesh.  Still, Auburn fans, most fans would love to have their team 6-3 right now.

No.17 Hawaii

34 of 50

For people who live on an island, Hawaii fans sure are uptight sometimes.

June Jones brought you to the edge of glory, but you haven't returned since then.  Hawaii fans have become more and more impatient as they pile up mediocre seasons.

No.16 Georgia

35 of 50

Fire Mark Richt, really?  After a hard two game opening, losing to Boise State and South Carolina, Georgia fans were done with their head coach.

However, seven wins later and first place seem to have shut the mouths of the bulldog faithful... for now anyway.

If the Bulldogs don't make the SEC title game, expect the impatient Georgia fans to jaw again.  If that happens it would be nice to see Mark Richt go somewhere he is appreciated.

No.15 Louisville

36 of 50

Three losses, it was time to fire the coach.  Three wins later, its time to keep him.  Impatience leads to manic behavior.

Be careful Cardinal fans, don't dump a good bottle before it has time to mature.

No.14 Arkansas

37 of 50

So 8-1 helps fans enjoy any season, but Arkansas fans are some of the most impatient around.

No.13 Boston College

38 of 50

No one blames Boston College fans this year.  2-7 overall and 1-5 in the ACC doesn't make any fan enjoy the season.

B.C. now stands for "better coach", because that's what they want in Boston.

No.12 Colorado

39 of 50

Colorado fans want to return to the glory days.  Well, not this year.

However, the Buffaloes did beat Colorado State.  Of course, they haven't beat anyone else.

Maybe Hawkins wasn't the problem.

It will be interesting how the already impatient Colorado fans handle their latest fall guy... I mean coach.

No.11 NC State

40 of 50

NC State fans can be some of the most impatient fans around.  They want to win, and sometimes do.  However, its the painful heartbreaking loses that fuel their impatient fire.

No.10 Miami

41 of 50

Miami fans are very impatient, and want to win at any cost.   Maybe that explains a few things that have happened in Hurricane land.

No.9 Washington

42 of 50

Every season it seems like the same thing in Washington.  Loss after loss, and fan complaint after fan complaint.

It has been nice to see some success this year for the Huskies.  For the impatient fans in Washington let's hope it is a sign of good things to come.

No.8 Arizona

43 of 50

There are a few bad things people could say about the impatient Arizona fans, but who would "stoop" to that level.

The only real win the Wildcats have this year is against a team whose coach is in danger of the same fate as theirs.

Arizona fans are excited about the future, but they were the same way a couple years back as well.

No.7 UCLA

44 of 50

UCLA= Underachieving Coach Losing Always, and impatient fans won't stand for it.

However, two wins in a row, including a 29-28 thriller over ASU, and the UCLA coach is sitting a little higher on the Bruins fans list.

Already on edge, if UCLA can win two of their last three it might save their season, and their coach.

No.6 Ole Miss

45 of 50

They might miss you now that you're gone Mr. Nutt.

Impatient Ole Miss fans got what they wanted, but will it get better for them?

It can't get much worse... can it?

No.5 Ohio State

46 of 50

The Ohio State University and one of the most impatient fan bases ever known.  A match made in football heaven, or hell depending on your perspective.

If nothing else, they are never boring to watch.  With that many fans, that much money, and all that tradition, it is amazing they ever keep a coach, or hire one for that matter.

If the team loses one big game, there are some calling for a head on a stick.  It is awesome to witness, but you have to feel sorry for the next Ohio State coach.

What about the current coach, you might ask?  At 6-3 they will probably call for him to be fired.

No.4 Florida

47 of 50

No "urban" renewal project can help the patience of the Gator fans.

Calls for a new coach were getting very loud this year, and then they beat Vanderbilt.  Of course, this was after four straight losses.

With a game against South Carolina looming, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Lose against Florida State at the end of the year, and you can bet that the fans will be calling out loud once again.

No.3 USC

48 of 50

The fans of USC are very impatient and very loyal.  They want to win, and when they don't they criticize their team and the coaches.

However, don't you dare criticize them.  It's okay for USC fans to say it about their own team, but don't you open your mouth.

That kind of loyalty is what makes college football so much fun.

No.2 Michigan

49 of 50

Michigan fans you are plain crazy... and it's awesome.  You will call for the firing of a coach for a bad interview.

Michigan fans are some of the absolute most impatient fans around.  But, you can't blame a program that has been around for over a century and used to winning.

Tradition is thicker than any ink on a contract.

In Michigan it is simple... win or go home.

No.1 Notre Dame

50 of 50

What would Jesus do?  He wouldn't complain about a coach when His team was winning.

The Irish fans are incredible.  They complain when the lose, but they complain when the win.  They don't seem to be a happy bunch, and yet they wouldn't have it any other way.

Every week brings another flood of critsism and complaints, and that's when they win.  You don't want to be around an Irish blog when they lose, it isn't pretty.

Irish fans are the most impatient football fans in college football.
