Bowl Projections: The 5 Best BCS National Championship Matchups

Danny FlynnNov 7, 2011

The "Game of the Century" between LSU and Alabama is only a few days old, but already many people in the college football world are wondering if there will be a rematch in the national championship game.

With four weeks left to play in the season, there's still a lot that can happen, and theoretically, there are still about eight or nine teams that could potentially play their way into the national championship game, depending on how everything shakes out.

We've still got three huge games pitting Top 10 teams against each other: No. 1 LSU vs. No. 8 Arkansas, No. 2 Oklahoma State vs. No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 4 Stanford vs. No. 7 Oregon.

There's still a lot of football left to be played, and a lot that can happen, but at this point, here's a look at the five national championship matchups that I would personally like to see the most.

1. LSU Tigers vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

1 of 5

After each team survived a scare this past Saturday, LSU and Oklahoma State are now the two top-ranked teams in college football, and both of them control their own national championship destiny.

The Tigers and the Cowboys have both gotten to 9-0 in completely different ways—LSU has relied on its stingy defense, while Oklahoma State has used its high-powered offense to pile up points and overwhelm teams with the dangerous offensive trio of QB Brandon Weeden, WR Justin Blackmon and RB Joseph Randle.

Watching the offensive-defensive battle that this game would offer up would be one word: epic.

Each team still has some work to do to finish on top, though, as LSU still has to get through No. 8 Arkansas and win the SEC championship game, while Oklahoma State has to find a way to finally beat No. 6 Oklahoma in the Bedlam Game.

2. LSU Tigers vs. Stanford Cardinal

2 of 5

Stanford’s Andrew Luck is one of the most highly regarded quarterback prospects we’ve ever seen, and to see him go up against a defense the caliber of LSU’s with a national championship on the line would be about as good as you can get.

Luck doesn’t face many stellar defenses out in the Pac-12, so this matchup would really tell us if he’s as good as advertised or not.

Would LSU expose Luck, or would his legend only continue to grow with a national championship on his resume?

3. LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

3 of 5

The idea of an Alabama-LSU rematch would likely cause a few groans from some and a few cheers from others, but if you watched the “Game of the Century” and you saw the intense atmosphere in Bryant-Denny Stadium, it’s hard to say that a rematch in the national championship game would necessarily be bad.

These are two of the best and most-talented defenses in college football history, and they both lived up to their billing for Saturday’s slugfest.

Sure, watching a 9-6 battle of field goals isn’t going to please everybody, but if these really are the two best teams in college football, and the circumstances dictated a rematch, I’d be all for it.

4. Stanford Cardinal vs. Boise State Broncos

4 of 5

Andrew Luck vs. Kellen Moore.

Can you imagine that battle?

Luck and Moore have been two of the most successful quarterbacks in college football history, so to finally get to see them shoot it out on the biggest stage in the sport would be quite a treat.

Luck may have a much brighter NFL future than Moore, but it would be interesting to see if the winningest quarterback in college football history would be able to outperform his more highly rated counterpart and finally help Boise State earn some national respect.

This matchup probably wouldn’t please too many folks from down South, but maybe it’s time the BCS crystal football heads out West for a change.

5. LSU Tigers vs. Boise State Broncos

5 of 5

Boise State has had to deal with a lot of criticism in recent years, especially from SEC fans who feel that the Broncos wouldn’t be able to compete in the SEC for a full season.

Well, what better way to prove that you can handle SEC competition than to play the No. 1 team in the country right in its own backyard for a national championship?

Boise State still needs some help to make it into the national championship game, but if the scenario plays out where the Broncos finally break through and make it to the big game, seeing them go up against a defense the caliber of LSU's would be very interesting.
