BCS Rankings: 5 Teams That Will Get Screwed in Week 11 Standings

Thad NovakNov 6, 2011

The most anticipated college football game of the season has come and gone, and the first real aftershocks will arrive in tonight’s revised BCS standings. Of course, Alabama’s overtime loss to LSU wasn’t the only game from this weekend carrying major BCS implications.

The darkest of dark horses in the BCS picture is a Houston team led by record-breaking QB Case Keenum. The Cougars improved to 9-0 with yesterday’s shellacking of Alabama-Birmingham, but the forgotten unbeatens aren’t going to get any love in the bowl picture from their performance this weekend.

Herein, a further look at Houston and four other schools who won’t get their just desserts in the latest round of BCS number-crunching.

5. Georgia

1 of 5

Obviously, Georgia can’t expect much from a win over New Mexico State during a week of high-powered SEC showdowns. Even so, the No. 18 Bulldogs narrowly missed a chance to jump into the top 15 this weekend.

A well-timed bye for Penn State and a close win by Michigan State will keep those two Big Ten powers ahead of the Dawgs, and also keep Georgia from feeling the full benefits of the teams losing above them (No. 14 Kansas State and No. 15 Michigan).

The new SEC East leaders might climb one spot higher, but they could have done a lot more.

4. Texas

2 of 5

The Longhorns more than took care of business at home against Texas Tech, but they’re not going to get the kind of bump in the rankings that they would like.

With a BCS average of .2117, No. 21 Texas is just too far behind No. 17 Michigan State (.3076) to gain more than a couple of spots this week.

Obviously, the Longhorns will benefit from the upset loss suffered by No. 19 Arizona State, but it’s becoming apparent that the fourth-best team in the Big 12 is better than the second-best team in most other conferences.

Sadly for Texas, that’s not going to show up in their Week 11 ranking.

3. Houston

3 of 5

Even by Conference USA standards, a win over UAB (1-8 overall, 1-5 in conference) doesn’t say much. Still, a 9-0 record is a 9-0 record, and the country’s fifth-best unbeaten team deserves at least a spot in the BCS top 10.

The No. 13 Cougars, though, probably aren’t going to get there. They started the weekend so far behind idle No. 12 Virginia Tech (.4698 compared to .5683 for the Hokies) that even the losses by No. 10 Nebraska and No. 9 South Carolina will do little good for Houston.

Don’t be surprised if the Cougars still trail the two-loss Gamecocks in tonight’s rankings.

2. Arkansas

4 of 5

While those other SEC teams were slogging through one of the season’s ugliest games, Tyler Wilson and the Razorbacks were thrashing South Carolina in Fayetteville, 44-28.

Even a convincing win over a top 10 foe, though, isn’t going to have much chance to improve the Hogs’ No. 7 ranking.

The only team above Arkansas to have lost this weekend was Alabama, and it’s a good bet that the one-loss Tide will still land above the one-loss Razorbacks in the rankings.

An outside chance at moving up by one position is a pretty paltry reward for Arkansas’ outstanding performance.

1. Boise State

5 of 5

Another week, another meaningless win for Kellen Moore’s squad. The No. 5 Broncos whipped UNLV in Vegas, 48-21, and if they’re really lucky, they might temporarily move up to No. 4.

Alabama’s first loss may or may not drop them below the 8-0 Broncos in the rankings, but if both teams win out, ‘Bama’s season-ending matchup with Auburn will probably put them back on top of Boise.

Even more galling to Bronco fans is the distinct possibility that even being unbeaten will (as usual for them) not be enough, with the one-loss Crimson Tide falling only to No. 4 and leaving BSU stuck at No. 5 while it prays for the upsets that it needs to get a title shot.
