BCS Rankings: 5 Teams Who Shouldn't Be in the AP Top 25
As we near the end of the college football regular season, many teams have proven they belong in the polls, while many others have shown us they belong nowhere near them. However, there still remain some squads who have somehow managed to squirm themselves in the Top 25.
We've seen these teams get beaten, pushed around and walked all over; yet, the Associated Press remains confident they belong in the Top 25. Today, we call the media out on it.
Take a look at the polls. Can you find who doesn't belong? Here are five fakes who shouldn't be there.
No. 25 Southern Miss
1 of 5The Golden Eagles are Conference USA's second representative. The first is undefeated Houston, but for some reason, voters saw it necessary to place a one-loss university from Mississippi in the Top 25.
So far, Southern Miss has one loss on the season to a decent Marshall team. Fortunately for them, they don't have to take on the Cougars during the regular season, so they are likely to remain with only one loss.
I honestly believe the voters ran out of teams to use in their polls, so they picked up Brett Favre's alma mater to finish out their poll. With games at home against Memphis and UCF, as well as a trip to Birmingham to face UAB, the Golden Eagles should finish the season on top of the C-USA East division.
No. 24 Auburn
2 of 5The Tigers had this week off in the SEC before they head off to Athens to face Georgia next week. They are 6-3 on the year so far, with losses to LSU, Clemson and Arkansas.
Auburn has played well this year considering their success last season, but with three losses, the Tigers don't deserve to be in the Top 25. The SEC West has already been won, and these Tigers won't be a part of it.
Still, with games against ranked Georgia and Alabama, don't expect Auburn to continue to be ranked. This flailing offense will continue to have problems as they finish their final three games of the season.
No. 22 Michigan
3 of 5Michigan went out and suffered a tough loss to Big Ten foe Iowa in a extremely close game. The Wolverines seemed like they were coming back when, in the final seconds, they failed four times to reach the end zone from inside the 5-yard line.
Losing their second game of the season, Michigan is stuck without much life left in its tank. Denard Robinson has pretty much dropped out of the Heisman race, while the defense resigned against a weak Iowa team, allowing 24 points.
With games against Nebraska and Ohio State remaining, staying in the Top 25 should be a challenge for these Wolverines.
No. 21 Texas
4 of 5The Longhorns are a decent team with a lot of young talent. Perhaps this is more of a case that they should be ranked lower, but UT is certainly a Top 25 fringe team.
This past weekend, they wrecked Texas Tech at home, winning 52-20. The week before that, they destroyed Kansas 43-0. However, with two huge losses to the Oklahoma schools, it's hard to say the Longhorns should be higher than No. 23. Ash and McCoy aren't performing as new starters, which leaves the Texas offense weak and put upon the shoulders of RB Whitaker.
Additionally, they have a couple tough games left. Kansas State two weeks from now is their last home game, but UT has to travel to Missouri, Texas A&M and Baylor. Each of those road games will be a huge challenge for such a young, inexperienced squad.
No. 20 Georgia Tech
5 of 5Georgia Tech also had a bye week this weekend. They had just come off a huge win over Clemson and had some well-deserved rest. For the most part, GT is in the same class as UT. They are a fringe Top 25 team that is a little too hyped up.
Their two losses to Virginia and Miami are extremely strange considering their easy win over Clemson. The Yellow Jackets have had some close games against weaker opponents all season, but losing to a struggling Miami and a weak Virginia squad were the wrong teams to fall apart against.
They look to continue to bust up other team's dreams as they take on Virginia Tech next weekend at home and then three weeks from now finish off the year by hosting rival Georgia.
