25 College Football Teams That Desperately Need Nike, Under Armour Makeover
When we look back on the 2011 season, there will be many reasons to remember it.
But one thing is clear about this year: It's also the season for new-look uniforms.
Even traditional programs like Michigan and Notre Dame have tweaked their look to enhance their image and add a few memorabilia dollars to the coffers.
So what are the 25 teams that should seriously consider a uniform makeover?
Duke
1 of 25Anything to make us talk about Duke football is a good thing for the Blue Devils.
Maybe some crazy looks like the ones at Oregon could help Duke become a cool location for some big recruits.
At least work on that helmet. That thing is seriously a bad 1980s leftover.
Auburn
2 of 25There's nothing wrong with Auburn's home uniforms. They are actually one of my favorites.
But it's time to ditch the all-white road uniforms.
With all of the flashier options available to so many other teams, it's time for Gene Chizik to see if Under Armour can work some magic.
Florida A&M
3 of 25I know we just celebrated Halloween recently, but what's going on with these uniforms at Florida A&M?
This is too gaudy for the USFL.
The football team lacks in uniform eye appeal, but the Rattlers band makes up for it big time.
Wyoming
4 of 25Much like the Auburn all-white uniforms, Wyoming has a problem here.
But the bigger problem is the very dark brown with yellow. Those colors are a bad mix, and if you've ever seen Wyoming with the dark uniform it's just horrible.
UNLV
5 of 25Hey, it's Vegas baby!
UNLV needs a little of the flash that fits with the region.
But this uniform looks like it came from a fourth-grade competition and the winner got free popcorn for life.
San Diego State
6 of 25Red and black go very well together, so there's no way to screw this one up.
Well, San Diego State found a way to do it.
The helmets should be black, and the Aztecs name emblazoned across it is just too much to read.
Simple is better.
Toledo
7 of 25Where do you start with Toledo?
Maybe with the all caps TOLEDO on the jersey and helmet.
There's also the cartoonish rocket, and if Toledo is wearing the blue and gold uniforms it looks even worse.
Tulsa
8 of 25There's a way to do the two-tone jersey look, and then there's Tulsa.
Tulsa's helmet also screams, "Hey UCLA, we really love what you got going on so we're going to see how it looks with our name."
The Golden Hurricanes look like someone whipped together a bunch of colors and this is what came out the other end.
Arizona
9 of 25I'm sure Arizona fans will rip me for this, but the "A" on the helmet looks like it was created in the 1970s and no one realizes it's really dated.
The blue jersey isn't bad, but when Arizona goes with the red jersey and the red pants...well, then we have a problem.
Hey Wildcats, you use red, white and blue. Certainly you can figure out a way to make that work.
Fresno State
10 of 25Fresno State's biggest problem is the helmet.
The stripe down the center and the green "V" on the back just don't go together well.
Just think what Nike or Under Armour could do to improve this look.
Marshall
11 of 25The huge block "M" on Marshall's helmet is bad, old school.
Ditch the green and go with white and black more.
It would also help the fans, who wouldn't need to wear green pants to games any longer.
Iowa State
12 of 25I'm a sucker for the old-school stripes on the shoulders, but the cardinal and gold can be tough on the eyes.
There's some similarities to USC, but the Trojans have a classy look and Iowa State has a carnival look.
IOWA STATE across the jersey is probably a good move as most fans would have no idea who the opponent was without it.
Boston College
13 of 25Boston College unveiled new uniforms in 2011, but was it really an improvement?
Not really.
The Eagles went retro on the helmet with three stripes down the middle, and the pants look like they hearken back to the Doug Flutie days.
They now have about six to eight different combos, but nothing is special.
Baylor
14 of 25Baylor showed off new uniforms this fall (thanks to Nike), and the Bears would be better off going back to the drawing board.
We get it—throw a few stripes across the pants and you have something cool. But really you don't.
Also, Baylor's helmet has always been one of the worst in college football.
West Virginia
15 of 25The all-gold uniforms need to be retired.
I don't know West Virginia's overall record in these uniforms, but the Mountaineers wore them against LSU and got beat.
WVU also wore them in the 13-9 loss to Pittsburgh in 2007, which cost the Mountaineers a shot at the BCS Championship Game.
It's time to put these gold atrocities down for good.
Southern Mississippi
16 of 25Southern Miss has a great schedule poster for this season, and if you look at it you'll see the Golden Eagles have a cool updated uniform.
But the old-school helmet is an embarrassment.
Even Brett Favre couldn't make it look good.
Tulane
17 of 25Tulane got rid of its coach during the season, so whoever takes over should look at a uniform overhaul.
The green jerseys are hideous and it doesn't go too well with the white helmet and those different colored stripes.
You're in New Orleans. Can you give me something jazzier?
Connecticut
18 of 25Maybe this is more a complaint of the helmet, rather than the entire uniform.
The dark blue helmet with the huge "C" on the side just doesn't work.
It screams mediocrity.
Boise State
19 of 25Kellen Moore and Boise State have enjoyed an unbelievable run the past four seasons.
But none of that excuses Boise for wearing these abominations on the opening weekend against Georgia.
The regular uniform is fine, but what Nike gave them for this game was embarrassing.
Bowling Green
20 of 25The gaudy orange and the huge interlocking "BG" make for a tough combination.
The actual jersey has some nice modern touches, but Bowling Green could use some professional help to generate more interest in the Falcons' look.
Idaho
21 of 25Idaho's uniform is simple.
Looks a little like Purdue and little like Notre Dame.
But you're Idaho and you need something more distinctive.
Louisiana Tech
22 of 25Like I've said, I love the stripes on the shoulder pads.
But helmets with the state on them have to go, and so do the bubble gum colors.
If you want to be taken seriously Louisiana Tech, let's darken those PMS numbers a little and give your program a more respectable uniform.
Akron
23 of 25Akron is sort of a love-it or hate-it type of uniform.
I'm sure I could find people who love the mascot jetting out of the "A" on the helmet, and the uniforms have been updated with the piping and stripes that Adidas and Nike love to add.
But there's just something about this one that doesn't fly with me.
Akron has a great color scheme, but it's not being used effectively.
Rice
24 of 25You would think slapping a unique-looking "R" on the side of the helmet would be eye catching.
Instead, it looks like someone got out a stencil and started coloring it in—much like the front of the Rice jersey.
Hey Rice, time to update the look.
Maryland
25 of 25I don't care if Maryland underwent a major overhaul of its uniforms and helmets thanks to Under Armour.
Everything about the changes are a college football catastrophe.
The old cliche that any publicity is good publicity doesn't work here.
Sorry Maryland. The only thing worse than the Terps uniforms was the decision to fire Ralph Friedgen and hire Randy Edsall.
