Georgia Bulldogs in the News

Delores Smith-JohnsonDec 12, 2008

Yes, it is true. Despite having an off season, our Bulldog Nation can still celebrate because we did indeed receive a bowl invitation and several key players received recognition for their hard work this season.

Now, I can't and won't reduce what happened during the season to insignificance. Those losses to Alabama, Florida, and Georgia Tech really hurt.  Our offense had a 28-12 lead at halftime against Georgia Tech! But, apparently, our offense was not enough to counter what our defense was experiencing against the Tech offense. What a mouth full of words! And I cannot even begin to express the disappointment in our losses to Alabama and Florida. But, despite all of the grief, I am here to report on some significant team accomplishments that continue to keep the Dawgs in the news.

First of all, last night I watched Knowshon Moreno, our star running back, as he was vying for the prestigious Doak Walker award.  For those who may not be familiar with this award, it was created in honor of Doak Walker, an exceptional college and professional football player, who left his mark on the sport. During his career, he received many honors, including the Heisman Trophy in 1948. Mr. Walker passed away in 1998 at the age of 71.

I don't think there could have been a more fitting recognition for Knowshon (of course winning would have been excellent) than to be a finalist for the award recognizing the top running back in the nation.  He was also named to the American Football Coaches' Association All American Team Offense and named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award.

Congratulations Knowshon! This week afforded us the opportunity to learn that Knowshon and A.J. Green, along with six fellow teammates were named to the Associated Press All SEC team. In fact, they and fellow Dawg, Clint Boling, were named to the first team.  But, it gets even better for A.J. since he was the only freshman named to the first team.

The freshman title has been very rewarding to A.J. this year, because he was also recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Year.  A.J. is truly on his way to establishing a legacy at Georgia. And to wrap up this review, the Dawgs are gearing up to head down to Orlando on New Year's Day to take on the Michigan State Spartans. It is sure to be an action packed game. For one thing, it is going to showcase the nation's top running backs, Knowshon Moreno and Javon Ringer.

Even though everyone has been talking about how we began this season at the top of the collegiate football mountain, I can say that we did indeed do a little sliding during the course of the year. However, we didn't fall off the mountain. We held on and managed to garner an impressive postseason report card.  For that, I can say go Dawgs!
