LSU vs. Alabama: Why Trent Richardson's Crimson Tide Will Roll Vaunted Tigers

Kyle VassaloNov 3, 2011

LSU has a great defense. Alabama has the best defense in the country. LSU scores 39.3 PPG, Alabama scores 39.4. While the differences between these two teams may be slight, they will ultimately allow Alabama to win the year's most anticipated matchup handedly.

No. 1 LSU versus No. 2 Alabama trumps any matchup the National Championship will put forth. These are the two best teams in the entire nation, and they aren't just squaring off for SEC supremacy or to see who will temporarily hold the designation as the No. 1 team in college football.

This is for everything.

Unfortunately for LSU, this game is going to end as the biggest disappointment of their season. With national championship and Heisman implications rampant in this game, winning will be the ultimate feather in Alabama's cap, while losing will take LSU from unparalleled juggernaut to the best one-loss team in the country.

LSU isn't overrated, Alabama is just that good. They allow a mind-blowing 6.9 PPG. Both defenses are laden with first-round caliber talent, but the fact that Alabama hasn't allowed over 14 points in any game this season is downright unbelievable. In a defensive struggle, Alabama has the edge.

To add salt to LSU's wound, Alabama also has the best player on the field. Trent Richardson is the sort of running back who can take over a game. Many believe A.J. McCarron's shortcomings in the passing game will make it impossible for Alabama to attain victory, but with the best back in the nation coming out of the backfield, LSU's defensive backs aren't going to see enough action to take over this game.

Richardson is 11 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark. He's a Heisman candidate, six of his last seven games have been over 100-yard performances, and he hasn't been held out of the end zone all season.

LSU isn't going to be impressed by his 18 touchdowns and insane yardage though. He's got to bring it, and bring it he shall. This game is obviously important to both teams and every player, coach and fan involved with the organizations, but it's life-changing for Richardson.

This is his moment to produce a signature performance. For the Heisman, for the National Championship. It's a game that will define his career, his draft stock and ultimately dictate his future both in college football and where he goes at the next level.

Pressure? Absolutely, but that's what college football is all about. With all eyes intently on Richardson, he'll deliver just as he always does.

With the impenetrable Alabama defense shutting down LSU and Richardson pounding the ball against the Tigers, Alabama will emerge victorious and solidify themselves as the undisputed No. 1 team in the nation.
