Autopsy Reveals Former NFL Star, Actor Bubba Smith Died of Drug Overdose

Zachary D. RymerNov 2, 2011

A couple months have passed since former NFL and movie star Bubba Smith passed away at the age of 66, but we're just now getting an answer as far as what exactly caused his passing.

Per a report from the Associated Press, Smith passed away from an "acute drug intoxication and other conditions." The Los Angeles County coroner's office claims that a large amount of phentermine was found in Smith's system.

According to Drugs.com, phentermine is an appetite suppressant that is used to treat overweight people. It is typically combined with diet and exercise and is used to ward off high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes.

The coroner's office also announced that Smith had an enlarged heart with "up to 75 percent blockage of some blood vessels."

At the time of Smith's death on Aug. 3, it was believed (see initial report from the Los Angeles Times) that he had died of natural causes.

Smith was the No. 1 overall pick of the Baltimore Colts in 1967, and he would go on to win a Super Bowl and make two Pro Bowls as a defensive end. He left the NFL in 1976 and proceeded to pursue an acting career.

Smith starred in several movies and TV shows, but he will forever be known for his portrayal of Moses Hightower in the Police Academy films. He also starred in a series of memorable ads for Miller Lite.

The idea that Smith could have passed from natural causes at the age of 66 always did seem a bit strange. Today's news is undoubtedly sad, but at least we have a definitive answer.
